FROM THE BERLIN ARQ*IVES 🗄️ Dorchen Richter 🌈 Getauft 1892 in Böhmen auf den Namen Rudolf, begann Dora schon jung, Mädchenkleidung zu tragen. Nachdem sie sich einer Theatertruppe angeschlossen hatte und nach Berlin zog, landete sie regelmäßig im Gefängnis wegen „andersgeschlechtlichen Habit“. ✨ Auftritt #magnushirschfeld der ihr einen behördlichen „Transvestitenschein“ besorgte und sein Dorchen im Institut für Sexualwissenschaft anstellte. Mit 30 endlich die Entfernung der Hoden, die die ersehnte erste Veränderung des Körpers brachte. Im Krankenhaus am Urban folgte 1931 die weltweit erste dokumentierte erfolgreiche Geschlechtsangleichung. 🏳️‍⚧️ Ihre Berliner Zeit in der Motzstraße endete mit den Nazis: Sie ließ 1934 in Prag ihren Namen offiziell in DORA RICHTER ändern, zog zurück nach Böhmen, aber wurde mit dem Kriegsende nach Deutschland vertrieben und starb 1966 in Bayern. 🥀 Besucht die Gedenktafel vor dem Klinikum Am Urban, die heute 17 Uhr feierlich angebracht wird. 🥂 Auf Dorchen! 🇬🇧 Born and baptized in Bohemia in 1892 as Rudolf, Dora started cross-dressing at a young age. After joining a theatre troupe and eventually ending up in Berlin, she was repeatedly arrested for publicly walking like a lady. ✨ Enter #magnushirschfeld who helped her obtain an official “transvestite certificate” and gave his Dorchen a job at the Institute for Sexual Science. Age 30, she finally underwent the long-awaited removal of her testicles – a first major step towards correcting her body. At Urban Hospital, she underwent the world’s first documented successful gender-affirming surgery in 1931. 🏳️‍⚧️ With the Nazis’ rise to power, she left her life in Motzstraße behind, officially changed her name to DORA RICHTER in Prague in 1934, and returned to Bohemia. A personal note: We are paralyzed. 💔 Yes, we will all get back on our feet, wiser and stronger than before. But not today. On Saturday night, we couldn't bring ourselves to grasp what had happened. On Sunday, we wandered the city in a daze. We pulled ourselves together in the morning, only to fall apart by evening. Shock comes in waves. The political noise, intrusive interview requests, and the storm on social media - they all pale in comparison to the emptiness in our minds and the silence in our communities. It was all too much. What we do know is this: We are not alone; we have each other. Some are already reaching out, while others prefer to be alone for now. Yet Berlin has many places where Queers are welcome and free to be themselves. Our spaces - whether they are bars and restaurants, sports groups, or community hubs - exist to support us. And they need to remain there for us even after the grief and anger have subsided. So let’s keep these places alive through our presence and our attention. The sweetest ending possible. ❤️🌈 I couldn’t imagine a better place to close my Queer-Owned & Inclusive Berlin series than @marc.patisserie. Marc brought his French pastry expertise from Nancy to Berlin and, since opening his own pâtisserie in 2022, has created a place where craftsmanship, creativity and inclusivity come together beautifully. Every dessert is made with incredible precision, seasonal ingredients and a lot of heart. One of Marc’s signatures is the famous Pavlova, it has become one of Berlin’s most loved desserts for good reason. The atmosphere is just as memorable as the pastries: industrial design softened by warm hospitality, making everyone feel genuinely welcome. Planning a birthday, celebration or private gathering? Marc also has a beautiful room in the back that can be booked for private events, making this little pastry paradise even more special.
