Dream bird ✅…

What a way to get underway this season! A banded mallard one week and a Mallard x Pintail hybrid seven days later.. The moments leading up to harvesting this bird will be engraved in my memories forever.. On one pass he was a bull and on the next he was a Drake mallard and as I pulled the trigger the disbelief became true. Reality had sank in as I watched him come down. After a good search Anas returned from the tule patch he went into with him in tow. At that moment my dreams became a reality. Thank you @jbohner_92 for being there and being apart of the moment. What a stud!!!

I can’t believe this is our 5th season hunting together. You are everything I wanted and more. You are probably the smallest Labrador in the marsh but by far one of the best to do it! Everyone that hunts over you loves you instantly. I wish I could take credit for you being the dog you are but I can’t.. You’re a natural in every aspect of the game. This season is for you girl!

Check out the Drake neoprene dog vest over at the drakewaterfowl.com website and use code FEJB23CA-23-FSJBCA at checkout for 30% off (code is good for 1 use per customer and can be used on all non sale and clearance items)

Messed around and hunted so hard I forgot why I was doing it in the first place…

Man that feeling of being a kid looking up at your dad at first shoot light with excitement and anticipation. Never knowing what the day held. Just excited to be in the blind.

I see a lot of people chasing the straps “The other guys” shot. I’ve always been chasing the straps he shot.. As many young boys do.. I can remember being so enamored by his ability to always be able to pull one out of nowhere. Whether it was ducks or fish he always seemed to be shooting em or catching em when others weren’t. My motivation in the outdoors will always be my dad and that young kid he used to tote around with him.

I miss the simple times of it all.

You will always be my favorite person to be in the blind with. The way time passes is unbelievable. I can remember you being a toddler sleeping in my jet sled. Now you’re the one pulling it out to the spot. 3 more youth weekends left for us after this… Can’t believe I’m saying that. Way to close it out strong for us kid.

3 more left…

There’s dogs then there’s duck dogs…

I’d give up everything just to hunt with her forever. After watching her health scare I didn’t care what kind of ducks we shot I just wanted to see her make another retrieve and another and another. Every person that seen her after her accident seen she was a different dog. She hunted with appreciation to just be out there. Watching her was a hell of a way to end out the season. She finished strong… she’s definitely got a few more left in her. For all you dog owners make sure you keep an eye on them dogs they don’t speak so you never know when something is wrong.

Most of you just see the picture….

I see the retrieve! Been a few weeks since her accident and we decided to run her to see how she feels and when I say I’ve never seen my dog, my friend, my companion so happy I’ve never seen it. She pranced around and chased every creature she could. The envision of this pintail sailing down around 170 yards from the blind in the very grass she seized in such a short time ago and the look of her locked on ready for the command to go. The look at me for the approval and off to the races she went it will be engraved in my memories forever.

Hunting her was the stickiest bandaid I’ve ever had to rip off but man after watching her retrieve this bird and her pure excitement. I can’t be more thankful I did. Me, my family and Anas appreciate all the support from everyone who reached out and checked on her continuously. Thank you all for not only the support but the advice and help us understand the situation.

I typically like to write something good but I’m just gonna quote Michael Clarke instead.

“I’m tired boss, Tired of being on the road as lonely as a sparrow in the rain”.

That quote about sums it up. Glad I got to watch the kid shoot a few and got out with @theduckhippie209 for our Christmas Eve shoot as well. And of course a picture of anas with her first bird back…

Pray for my Pup… Today has to go down as the scariest hunt I’ve had. Today at about 3:30 Anas collapsed and went into a full seizure during a retrieve. She went fully submerged under water thankfully I was feet away to rush her to land where we waited for rescue. I wanna thank @jbohner_92 and @wesfin10 for reacting fast and helping get my stuff out so I could focus on her. I also wanna give a huge thanks to our local refuge employee who rushed out to help get her out and helped get her and my equipment into my truck .I’ll keep everyone posted on what we find is the cause. But she ended up having multiple seizures. So we are getting her looked at to find the cause. Thanks to those who already checked on us and I’ll try to reach out to people by tomorrow. Hug your dogs.. I’m just thankful mines here to still hug.

These birds turned me into a dreamer long ago and I spend every winter trying to live up to the moments I’ve envisioned as well as giving clients the opportunity to live out theirs. The dreams of wing beats, the sound of a hen mallard as she lets out a cadence across the stale morning fog, The envision of everything lining up and the geese begin to spin, the intense looks on everyone’s face in the blind as they eagerly await wondering if this is it, is this the pass. The chase of these birds will grab ahold of you like the fruit of the lotus. It’s a life long enchantment that grabs ahold of you and the more you go or hypothetically eat the fruit the more it grabs ahold of you. The more you will see and the farther you fall into the dream of what next, what’s around the corner, what if I set up here or go there. That excitement of “What If” is unmatched
And keeps the dreams alive.
