Did you know that the QuarryHouse mascot, The Man with the Hammer, could have been The Man with the Whisk? Thirty years ago, when Ed and Missy Westbrook co-founded the company, it would either be a stone company or a restaurant; perhaps they would have served Stone Soup if it was the latter. Their neighbor, Philip Andrews, was a freelance graphic designer who created the logo using a Rapidograph pen, artboard, and acetate overlay. WPA posters of the 1930s inspired him. Fortunately, the stone business succeeded, and a cooking implement never replaced the hammer. We are excited to celebrate 30 years of The Man with the Hammer and Quarryhouse! #quarryhouseinc #30thanniversary #stonemasons by @quarryhouseinc

A Message on My 72nd Birthday. 🎂

As I celebrate my 72nd birthday, I’ve taken a moment to reflect on more than 45 years in the world of stone masonry.

Looking back, what is most evident is that this journey was never a solo one. It has been made possible by an extraordinary group of family, friends, colleagues, craftspeople, partners, clients, and mentors who have supported, challenged, inspired, and taught me along the way.

First, I thank my wife, Missy, my steadfast partner from the beginning, and our children: Dillon and Cassie, who have joined me at QuarryHouse; Luke, our musician; and Jennifer, my amazing healer. Their love and support mean everything to me.

I have also been blessed to work alongside remarkably talented and dedicated people. Every day, the QuarryHouse team represents the values, craftsmanship, work ethic, and ideals I have tried to uphold throughout my career. I could not be prouder of them.

Stone masonry is rigorous, physical, demanding work. We strive for perfection, yet stone itself is not a perfect medium. Every piece has its own history, character, variation, strengths, and imperfections. Learning to respect those qualities and find beauty within them has been one of the great lessons of my life—a lesson that extends far beyond stone.

I also thank my partners at CITCO, Camiran Rasool and Valentina Fraccaroli, who for the past decade have continually expanded my vision of what is possible in stone, design, craftsmanship, and creativity.

Today, at 72, I feel blessed, humbled, and above all, grateful.

And I am very much looking forward—to the next decade, to continuing to learn and create, and to the challenges and opportunities still ahead.

To everyone who has shared in this journey: thank you.

Peace, health, happiness, and prosperity to you all. by @quarryhouseinc

On August 28th, we had the pleasure of hosting a Design Marin panel exploring the creation and development of Imagination Park with Eric Blasen (Blasen Landscape Architecture) and Sarita Patel.

One of the things we value most about events like this is the opportunity to bring our local design community together and share ideas, learn from one another, and celebrate the creativity & collaboration happening right here in Marin.

A special thank you to Dawn and the entire Design Marin team for creating these opportunities for connection and for inviting QuarryHouse to participate in the Panel.

We’re grateful to be part of this Community and already looking forward to next year!

Join us for a Design Marin San Anselmo Event: Imagination Park with Ed Westbrook of QuarryHouse, Blasen Landscape Architecture & Sarita Patel.

✨ Design Marin | August 28 at 11:30 AM ✨

Join us for a special Design Marin presentation exploring the story behind Imagination Park in San Anselmo, and the extraordinary collaboration that brought George Lucas’ vision to life.

Through storytelling, Ed will be joined by Eric Blasen, Founding Principal & Gary Rasmussen, Principal, of Blasen Landscape Architecture to share the artistry, landscape, craftsmanship, and collaboration behind this Marin landmark. We’re also honored to welcome special guest Sarita Patel, who worked closely with George Lucas for many years, and will share the story of how George first approached her with his vision, and how she helped translate that vision into reality, alongside the many talented artisans involved in the project.

Located in the heart of downtown San Anselmo, Imagination Park celebrates creativity, imagination, and George Lucas’ remarkable legacy. Donated to the Town of San Anselmo by Lucas in 2013, the park is home to life-sized bronze sculptures of Yoda and Indiana Jones, created by sculptor Lawrence Noble.

Come hear the stories behind the design - and discover what it takes to transform an extraordinary idea into a place that belongs to a community.

We hope you’ll join us!
**Go to @design.bayarea and click on the Design Marin Post** to purchase your tickets.

Tickets are $20 General Admission - $10 Design Bay Area Members

As we open the archives of our "Vintage QuarryHouse" Series, we're transported back to one of the collaborations that continues to inspire us today, our work with the legendary landscape architect Lawrence Halprin at Stern Grove in San Francisco.

Lawrence wasn't simply designing landscapes; he was shaping experiences. His work celebrated movement, nature, and the way people gather within a space. From Sea Ranch to Ghirardelli Square, Freeway Park, and countless public landscapes, his vision transformed how we think about the relationship between architecture, stone, and the natural world.

His passion for craftsmanship, authenticity, and the enduring beauty of natural materials perfectly aligned with our own philosophy. From the first watercolor sketch that brought the vision to life, to days spent alongside Lawrence Halprin selecting monumental stone at the quarry, through the hands of skilled craftspeople, and finally into a landscape that continues to inspire and welcome visitors decades later - Stern Grove in San Francisco.

Lawrence understood that every stone had its own personality, and he believed the right piece could elevate an entire landscape.

Looking back through these photographs reminds us that the best projects are never just about construction. They are about relationships, a shared vision, and creating places that will be enjoyed for generations.

Thank you, Lawrence, for your trust, your friendship, and for reminding us that great landscapes begin with listening - to the land, to the stone, and to one another. by @quarryhouseinc

Scenes from the Shop: Behind the Stone

From massive saw blades and CNC programming to hand-finished carvings and textured stone, every piece that leaves our shop carries hours of craftsmanship behind it. These are the moments most people never see, the sketches, plans, the machinery and the hands behind the craft.

Each and every single Crew Member at the Shop - and in the Field - are at the heart 🤎 of everything we do. Meet Pablo, our Shop Foreman, who keeps production moving, supports the team, and helps turn complex ideas into finished stonework for our Clients.

This is where the work & the magic 🪄 happens.

We could not be more honored than to spotlight our Italian partners, CITCO and their truly visionary presence at this year’s Salone del Mobile. Their booth pushes the boundaries of stone design, showcasing a stunning collaboration with London-based designer Paul Cocksedge - renowned for his ability to transform simplicity into something extraordinary.

From monumental forms sculpted from a single block - to precisely carved, spiraling geometries - these pieces explore movement, balance, and the surprising fluidity of stone. More highlights from Salone del Mobile in Milan coming soon—stay tuned.

Recently, Ed and James were lucky enough to spend a day out on the Bay with one of our Vendors. The skies were bright blue, the breeze was perfect, and the scenery reminded everyone why we love where we live and work.

We are always deeply honored to collaborate with our dear friend and brilliant letter carver, Chris Stinehour. Watching Chris at work is truly inspiring - his precision, artistry, and devotion to his craft bring a timeless beauty to every project he touches. Here he is placing the final, delicate touches on the lettering for a Travertine Fountain Base.

Chris, your extraordinary talent is matched only by your generosity of spirit. Thank you!
