1. An honorarium of ₹2,000, plus ₹1,000 towards travel
2. Publication in ZEENAT, with full credit for their work

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS: Zeenat - Queerness and Beauty

Art Is(t) Queer, an arts initiative of @ddaf_india, invites contributors for Zeenat — a community-led queer zine exploring the many ways we understand, experience, question, and create beauty.

For this volume, Zeenat focuses on the intersection of queerness and beauty. What becomes possible when beauty is defined by those who have long been excluded from defining it?

We’re interested in beauty that exists beyond dominant standards — in survival, resistance, care, identity, intimacy, joy, and the things we were once taught to hide.

You may submit a proposal for personal narrative, poetry, illustration, collage, photography, mixed media, or any other creative format your idea takes shape in.

📝 At this stage, we’re looking for your idea, not a finished piece.

📅 Last date to submit: 11 October, 2026

Eyes are the window to the soul, or so we’re told.

One can find all about training your muscles to hold a certain eye shape on the internet these days. Doe eyes, almond eyes, hunter eyes, deer eyes, there’s a tutorial for each one. As if the shape of a window changed what passes through it.

If an eye can be trained to look a particular way, perhaps it can also be trained to see beyond it.

We all know @thezeenataman as the woman who broke many moulds Hindi cinema had set for a leading lady. Be it in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Insaaf Ka Tarazu, whichever film you first saw her in, she was impossible to look away from.

She was the it girl before “it girl” was even a phrase. Many of the new generation may know her from her online presence and love her for it, but few realise just how much of a legend she already was, decades before any of us were watching or born!

Here, she puts into words something we don’t say enough: beauty was never something to chase or perform. It’s already within us, we just need to explore it.

We often reserve the word beautiful for things that are easy to look at, easy to go through. Anytime anything difficult comes through, it becomes something to hide, something to get past quietly.

Your struggles and your triumphs are all part of your story. Misery and distress are part of it too, and if difficult times exist alongside good ones, isn’t getting through the hard trials beautiful in itself?
