It’s RELEASE DAY for Hearts Invincible by @yarrowleafauthor! This series is packed full of things I love in books. Some of them are about the aesthetic and vibes and events. (Gang violence? Dystopian setting? Emergency response? Superpowers? Hazmat? Sci-fi tech? Yes please!!)

Other things I love about this series are deeper. Thematic. And honestly? Some of the lessons Gabe has to learn in this book were kinda, sorta, definitely relevant to me too. This story is part of a series of events God has placed in my life to help me reach out to people and seek ways to connect with the community he’s given me. To make choices that are helping me break free of patterns I’ve been stuck in.

Fiction is powerful. I’m so glad I got to read this book. I hope you’ll pick up the series and read it too. 🩵⚡️📚

This is your sign to go road-tripping with a friend ✨🌳🪨🏙️

It was SO FUN to hang out with @heatherroseiv this summer as we prepped for and traveled to the YWW Retreat and prepared for our book launch! We went all up and down the northeast/mid-Atlantic area, including the Blue Ridge Parkway!

10/10 recommend. (Particularly for the campground kitty we met!)

If you’re just hearing about this book for the first time, welcome! This is a story about people who never got a chance to be heroes… but they’ll rise up anyway. It’s a story about people who “slipped through the cracks”… but they find they are more loved than they could have imagined. Getting to visit New York City with my book was amazing little surreal. Being a superhero fan, I’ve seen NYC in movies and comics and books so many times over. The aesthetic bled into my own superhero story, so it was very fun to get to go there!

(Also, Central Park is so big?? Like I thought it would be like. A long grass rectangle with trees and a large pond. But it was a Real Park with places to explore and things to see and we only got to a small part of it. 10/10, would go again.)

Also I got on the subway moving in the wrong direction. Twice.

As an EMT with a history of running shifts with an ambulance corps, and as someone who teaches first aid and search & rescue, it’s fun to address the first responder aspects of Extension Squad when…

-Most of the characters have very little knowledge about emergency response

-The MC had like, a few semesters of classes in emergency response (all in-class lectures, very little hands-on)

-The hero system is underfunded and not up-to-date with best practices

It’s the fun little mix of “What do they get right?” and “What do they get wrong?” and “Where do they make things better, and where do they make things worse?”

And then, there’s ✨superpowers✨ but mostly just wimpy ones with serious drawbacks because that’s fun.

-Super strength? You can use it for five seconds.

-Extreme flexibility? Enjoy the subluxations!

-Enhanced senses? Have fun learning to handle the overstimulation!

Three proof copies later, and I finally have a version that looks good for KDP! Two of the illustrations weren’t showing up right thanks to the print quality limitations, but it’s finally fixed after a month of fighting it. Thank goodness because I only have a few more days I could edit the manuscript.

The highest quality illustrations will come from Lulu, but there are now functional copies on KDP. XD

“Why have illustrations in your book?” Here’s why. ‘Nuff said.

The first Extension Squad paperback releases September 30! A second proof copy is in the mail now—fingers crossed that the printing will show up right this time!

(I’ll actually be listing it on Lulu as well as KDP. Lulu’s print quality is much higher, through KDP trims it better and is easier for most readers. But there shall be options!)
