You can blame my sister for the pun…

The first paperback collection of Extension Squad releases today! I have been begging @r.m.scheller for this for years now🙃. This series is full of fun characters, high stakes, complex themes, and lots of illustrations by the awesome @heatherroseiv .

I was tired of looking at screens, so I decided to make a paper craft post instead. It felt like an appropriate way to celebrate these digital books becoming paperback😌.

As we’re getting closer to Hearts Invincible’s release day, I’m finding myself looking back. We’ve come a long way, but like Gabriel, we haven’t made it to the end on our own. So many people have helped get this trilogy to its conclusion, among them some immensely talented authors that I’m honored to count as both peers and friends.

If you haven’t read their work, I encourage you to do so. Each of them carries something special and unique in their storytelling, and I’m so honored to have received their endorsement for the different books within the Aftermath Trilogy.

Y’all, it’s Release Day for THE EXTENSION SQUAD, a project I just recently heard about and am exceedingly excited
for. First published on Patreon, THE EXTENSION SQUAD is an original-English light novel series written by R. M.
Scheller @r.m.scheller and illustrated by Heather Rose @heatherroseiv. This paperback collection includes the first three volumes, plus lots of bonus content between each one!
This series features superpowers, untrained emergency responders, and a nuanced take on what it means to live like a hero. Check out the story👇

The law is simple: a life for a life, no matter the circumstances.

But society still has a use for killers. By doing the grunt work for the heroes, they can save up more time to live. It’s a
vicious world of prisoners scrambling against each other, doing anything for another day to survive.

Austin’s life was never supposed to turn out that way. He was a hero in training, supposed to help people on the right side
of the law. But when he finds himself thrown in with the cutthroats after killing in defense of another person, he must
learn to navigate this new life while staying true to his ideals.

Are you ready? I sure am!

If you want to depict painful events accurately and sensitively, a key step is to conduct thorough research. Portraying trauma inaccurately can reinforce negative stereotypes, make readers feel disconnected from the character, and leave readers who experienced the trauma themselves feeling unseen.

Now, sometimes, when writers do research for their books, they look for quick answers.

“How tall is the Statue of Liberty?” is the kind of fact you can look up in a minute or two. That’s fine.

But you shouldn’t google, “What are the signs of PTSD?” and slap the first three symptoms from the top result into the character’s personality.

Complex, sensitive subjects deserve thorough research.

If trauma is so common in stories, why should writers take special considerations about the topic?

It’s because our words hold power—the power to help someone feel seen or to make them feel cast aside.

To give people courage or to leave them afraid.

When we tell stories that feature terrible situations, we should do so in a way that inspires the reader toward love, truth, and light. We should reach out a hand to people who are hurting and help them know that there is hope.

But when we mishandle a topic as close to peoples’ hearts as trauma, we can muddy that message of hope.

If you spend more than a few minutes in any online writing community, you’ll get the impression that writers delight in giving their characters trauma.

Between jokes about how badly they’re injuring their characters, tongue-in-cheek remarks about how much their characters must hate their writers, and memes about how evil authors are, an outside observer might conclude that authors are villainous in nature.

It’s not wrong to ever make a joke about what writers put their characters through.

But when you’re writing about difficult, sensitive situations, there are important factors to consider.

The past few days have been surreal: sitting at lunch with a bunch of my favorite authors, learning wisdom and just getting refreshed mentally and spiritually.
It's been such an honor meeting everyone!
