I keep seeing the phrase “true enemies to lovers,” but the problem is…everyone expects different things from different tropes.

When I first wrote and released Castle of Dusk and Shadows, I didn’t even market it as enemies to lovers, because it was nothing like the hate to love romance I’d just written in my Cursed Empire series, where two on opposing sides of a war, with generations of animosity between their peoples and every reason to not work out, found common ground, fell in love, and overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles. How could I match the epic-scale enemies to lovers romance I had with Jalie and Kovi?

But Elle and Fitz are also naturally opposed. They don’t trust one another. She hates him and thinks the worst of him. He resents her for her deception. Their beliefs are opposed. Yet when Fitz falls for her, he realizes he needs to change. (Like Darcy in Pride and Prejudice — Castle is a retelling, after all!) As readers kept labeling enemies to lovers, I realized it was. Just a different flavor.

So there you have it. All sorts of flavors of enemies to lovers exist. You have to know what you’re in the mood for when you pick up a book. Here are a few types I’ve written so far into my books.
