POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Currently showing in Before & After: Fragments of Origin, artists from CAMP membership, the Urban Room, Levinsky Gallery Space, Roland Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth. My work: Glacial Inversion (2024) is a long exposure pinhole photograph, made with expired redscale colour film (inverted) during an international art and science residency on a barquentine tall ship in the Svalbard Archipelago in midsummer 2022. The image was captured while afloat on a rib boat, moving on the ebb and flow of the Arctic Ocean. Overwhelmed by the sight, it was impossible to gauge the distance and scale of the glacier, an ancient form of ice that appeared as an aberration on both the near and distant horizons. Dimensions: 20 cm x 15 cm x 25 mm colour photo on acrylic block #glacier #arctic taken in Roland Levinsky Building, Plymouth Uni by @rachlouall

"During our last week on Örö Island, we have been watching and recording the ‘Shifting Light – Valon siirtymiä’. We have observed the changing landscape and the unexpected encounters that arise as the flora and fauna transition into Autumn, coinciding with a significant decrease in daylight hours. This period builds momentum toward the Equinox and follows the Equilux, which is when day and night are approximately equal at 12 hours each, signalling the start of meteorological autumn."

How do you spend a residency on an island where the days keep getting shorter? With sunrise swims, sunset walks and a lot of looking. Two days before the equinox, Rachael Allain and Kaisu Koivisto share their work in progress from Örö:

"I have been responding and adjusting to the ‘Shifting light’/ ‘Valon siirtymiä’ on the island, through an embodied practice using a range of methods and recording devices.
Every day Kaisu and I walk to the east beach for sunrise swims and then to the west beach for the sunset on the horizon.
Watching and experiencing the rapidly decreasing daylight hours as we move towards the Autumn Equinox on 23rd September, when there is equal day and night. I have also been attempting to learn Finnish!"

-Rachael @rachlouall

Kaisu is gathering footage for a video installation, Kimmel/Glimmer, with support from AVEK. The work continues her exploration of Northern environments and their histories.

Koivisto @kaisukoivisto
is a visual artist based in Helsinki. In her installations, she works across photography, drawing, sculpture and video.

Film still from work in progress made during my daily swims in the sea, noting the plethora of wild flora and fauna on the island as we move towards the Autumn Equinox.

From a series of Baltic Blue prints made on the fringes between the land and the water on the southeast coast of the island, on the sandy Solkuro beach/ Solkuron uimapaikka, recording the air and sea temperatures and the fluctuating UV levels.

Rachael Allain is an artist-researcher based in the Southwest, UK. Her practice is shaped through an embodied phenomenological exploration of watery sites, often using artist residencies as methodology. She explores liminal spaces and places, in between the land and bodies of water, working with art and scientific data imaging to reveal invisible realms of our visible world.

Welcome to Öres!

Introducing September Artists in Residence Rachael Allain & Kaisu Koivisto!

Rachael Allain’s and Kaisu Koivisto’s theme for the residency is “Shifting Light – Valon siirtymiä,” focusing on transient moments of change, growth, renewal and fluctuating daylight hours. The island, its histories, and nature are a location in which
our artistic practices meet.

Rachael’s interest in intertidal zones fringing the land, above and below the horizon and the Baltic Sea, meets Kaisu’s long-term inquiry into
abandoned military structures and how nature takes over.

The artists are challenged
and inspired by the phenomenological engagement that can only arise from being physically present in a place and the unexpected explorations that can be realised through an embodied, sensorial, lived experience.

Individual presentations coming soon!

Deep partial solar eclipse yesterday, Wednesday, August 12, 2026 from the clifftop at Thurlestone in south Devon, which was within the deep-coverage zone with unobstructed open sea views to the west, experiencing peak coverage of roughly 95% shortly after 7:15 PM. In anticipation of the Solar Eclipse tomorrow, 12-08-26, when we are expected to have clear skies and a maximum of 95% coverage of the sun in the South West, UK, I’m sharing a small section of Blue Eclipse- Revisited, Firestone Bay, Plymouth
Digital film 3 mins 48 secs

A double exposure (flipped) film made on the deep partial solar eclipse which occurred across the United Kingdom on the morning of Friday, March 20, 2015, between 8:30 am, peaked between 9:35 and 9:45 am, and ended around 10:43 am. Filmed in the tidal sea pool, at Firestone Bay in Plymouth with hydrophonic sound, it captures the shifting light phenomena reflected onto the water, as the Moon blocked approximately 83% of the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth. It was the most substantial solar eclipse visible from the UK since the total eclipse of August 11, 1999. taken in Firestone Bay by @rachlouall
