A woman’s lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia is 1 in 7 and for women in Aotearoa New Zealand is 1 in 9.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with over 2.3 million women diagnosed each year according to the World Health Organisation. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is held each year from 1-31 October and plays a critical role in highlighting the impact of breast cancer on individuals and communities.

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2026, RACS spoke with Dr Jasmina Kevric FRACS, an award-winning breast cancer surgeon, on the importance of breast screening, concerns that women often have when seeing a breast cancer surgeon, how breast cancer surgery has changed and where its future lies. He Ngakau Ora – Recognition for First Māori General Surgeon.

Whakanuia e te Rangatira. We celebrate Professor Jonathan Koea – recently recognised by his peers at Te Ohu Rata o Aotearoa-Māori Medical Practitioners Association’s 30th annual conference in Auckland with the prestigious Paratene Ngata ‘Ngakau Ora’ award.

This award is given in Dr Pat Ngata’s memory to one who has shown outstanding concern for the wellbeing of individual members. The award was presented by members of Dr Ngata’s whānau including his widow who spoke poignantly about her husband – a teacher and mentor to many Māori doctors including Jonathan.

Through his role of Kaiārahi/ Director of Te Rau Poka surgical academy, Jonathan has for the past six years lead the programme and provided support for a growing number of trainees and students under his tutelage. He is also the first Māori Professor of Surgery and gave his inaugural lecture in 2024 at the University. by @racsurgeons

As healthcare systems across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand face growing demand, workforce shortages and changing community expectations, reliable workforce data has never been more important.

RACS activities reports provide valuable data showing how the surgical workforce is evolving across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, and the evidence we need to plan for the future.

The latest report highlights encouraging progress across the profession.

Key findings include:

- a 15.9% increase in Active Fellows, growing from 6,247 in 2015 to 7,240 in 2025.
- a 28.9% increase in new Fellows admitted through SET and SIMG pathways, rising from 249 in 2015 to 321 in 2025.
- a 12.2% increase in active SET trainees, from 1,177 in 2015 to 1,321 in 2025.
- women now account for 27% of Fellows under 49 years of age, up from 17% a decade ago

Together, these trends reflect a profession that is becoming more diverse, inclusive and representative of the communities it serves.

Faster specialist registration must translate into better access to care.

The final evaluation of Australia’s Expedited Specialist Pathway provides useful early evidence that the pathway is faster, more predictable and attractive to eligible overseas-trained specialists.

RACS supports its objective of reducing unnecessary duplication, cost and delay for appropriately qualified specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs), but warns speed cannot be the only measure of success.

Eighty-nine per cent of SIMGs on the pathway were practising in metropolitan areas, compared with 11 per cent in regional, rural or remote locations.

"Registration reform is not, in itself, workforce planning,” said RACS President Dr Philip Morreau.

RACS is calling for targeted, evidence-based workforce planning and distribution, alongside ongoing quality and safety monitoring as the pathway expands.
