As surgeons and proceduralists, we spend years learning how to care for our patients. But how much time do we spend learning to care for our own bodies?

The physical demands of our work accumulate over hundreds and thousands of procedures.

And career longevity isn't just about what happens in the OR.

It's also about what we do outside the OR—strength, mobility, recovery, sleep, stress management, and the habits that help us sustain physically demanding careers.

That's why we created the Surgeon & Proceduralist Career Longevity Program!

Through small-group learning and individualized ergonomic assessment and coaching, we help surgeons and proceduralists identify their own risk factors and develop practical strategies for both work and life.

We're keeping the group small to allow for personalized attention, and a few additional spots are available.

Applications for the Australasian Students’ Surgical Conference (ASSC) 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟕 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞 are now OPEN!

ASSC is the largest surgical conference for students in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2026 we celebrated our tenth anniversary under the theme “Dare to Dream”, welcoming more than 400 delegates.

In 2027, we take the next step with our theme, “𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧”. There is a persistent myth that some people are simply born for surgery. ASSC 2027 rejects that idea. Every surgeon you admire was once a student holding a needle driver for the first time. What set them apart was deliberate practice, mentors who invested in them, and the discipline to keep going.

Join us in 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞, Australia, from 𝟕–𝟗 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟕, as we build a conference around four pillars: built through practice, through people, through knowledge, and for the future.

We are seeking motivated medical students from across Australia and New Zealand to join our committee. Whether this is your first or fifth time with ASSC, you will be supported, challenged and trusted with real responsibility. We encourage all students to apply regardless of experience! Last Saturday, RWS director Caroline Chaplin had the honour of presenting at @racsurgeons Annual Scientific Meeting as a guest speaker in Tasmania! Providing expertise on the necessities of starting up a private practice, this was a wonderful opportunity to contribute valuable knowledge and practical insights to the medical community.

For Queensland Road Safety Week, 107 silhouettes stood in King George Square to represent the lives that will be lost between now and Christmas if current trends continue. Thank you to everyone who came down to our activation to pause and reflect on how we can keep ourselves, and each other, safe on our roads. #QRSW

This week didn’t slow down for anything.

Clinic and 3 patients in theatre on Monday. Two full clinic days. Then a flight to Melbourne for a RACS Board Strategy Day, straight into a Board meeting, then on to Brisbane to present on a panel at the RACS Qld State Meeting, and hand out a couple of awards, as part of @racsurgeons Vice President duties, while I was there.

Honestly, the best part wasn’t the panel. It was catching up with surgeon friends between sessions, and somehow finding kangaroos wandering the hotel grounds.

Leadership work doesn’t pause the clinical work and I wouldn’t want it to. They feed each other.

High performance is not only the property of sport. A whole-human approach to load, preparation and recovery is standard practice for athletes and almost untouched across many professions carrying the highest stakes possible.
