🚨Trigger Warning: cancer, mental health and serious mental illness, neglect, death and dying.

🎙️Episode 220, part of our education and workforce development series. In this thought-provoking episode, Naman Julka-Anderson and Jo McNamara are joined by Dr. Laura Charlesworth to explore the experiences of people living with serious mental illness alongside cancer.

Laura shares insights from her research into how serious mental illness and other co-morbidities can influence cancer care, and discusses the importance of person-centred care, health service design and tackling health inequalities.

Laura completed her PhD in 2024, titled Enabling coping in people living with cancer and serious mental illness. Her research explored how people living with serious mental illness perceived and experienced their needs when diagnosed with and treated for cancer. Through in-depth interviews and grounded theory analysis, Laura developed a new theoretical model highlighting how personal experiences and resilience, healthcare encounters and stigma, and the wider social determinants of health can shape an individual’s ability to cope with the complexities of living with cancer and serious mental illness.

💙 World Prehabilitation Day - 16th September 2026

Check out all our prehabilitation themed podcast episodes (link in bio, use the search function to find prehab).

What is prehabilitation?

Prehabilitation, or ‘prehab’, is about helping people with cancer get as ready for treatment as possible. It can begin around diagnosis and continue before and during treatment, with support tailored to the individual.

Macmillan Cancer Support describes prehabilitation as focusing on three key areas:

🏃‍♀️ Physical activity and exercise
Supporting fitness, strength and physical function.

🥗 Nutrition
Assessing and supporting nutritional health, including addressing weight loss or malnutrition where needed.

🧠 Psychological wellbeing
Supporting mental health and helping people manage anxiety, depression and the emotional impact of treatment.

Prehabilitation isn’t simply about getting ‘fit for surgery’. It can support people having surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.

Prehabilitation can help improve fitness and nutrition, reduce anxiety, support recovery and quality of life, and may reduce complications and length of hospital stay following surgery.

Prehab should be personalised, needs-based and multidisciplinary. It’s about preparing for treatment, supporting recovery and helping people feel more informed and in control throughout their cancer journey. 💙

There are patients who need radiotherapy urgently, and sometimes waiting until Monday simply isn’t appropriate.

For example, radiotherapy can be used as an emergency, or urgent treatment to help manage:

🧠 Symptoms caused by a brain tumour or cancer that has spread to the brain, such as swelling, or neurological symptoms.

🦴 Pain, or other complications from cancer that has spread to the bones.

🫁 Problems caused by a tumour pressing on important structures, such as the airway.

🩸 Bleeding caused by a tumour, where radiotherapy may be used to help control the bleeding.

🦴 Spinal cord compression, which is a really important emergency. Cancer can spread to the spine and put pressure on the spinal cord. Without rapid assessment and treatment, this can lead to serious and potentially permanent problems, including loss of movement or bladder and bowel function. Radiotherapy may be part of the urgent treatment to relieve that pressure and control the cancer.

So when you hear “radiotherapy doesn’t usually happen at weekends”, it doesn’t mean “nobody gets radiotherapy at weekends.”

🌍 World Radiotherapy Awareness Day 🌍

Today we celebrate radiotherapy, one of the most important treatments in the fight against cancer.

But radiotherapy isn’t just about machines, technology and treatment plans.

It’s about people.

The therapeutic radiographers who care, reassure and deliver treatment day after day.
The physicists, dosimetrists, engineers and technicians who make every treatment possible.
The oncologists, nurses, researchers and wider teams who work together to give patients the best care.
And, most importantly, the patients and families at the heart of everything we do.

Radiotherapy plays a part in treating around half of all people diagnosed with cancer, yet it can still be one of the least understood cancer treatments.

From everyone at Rad Chat, thank you to the radiotherapy community around the world for everything you do.
