It’s here! Our existential banjo jam “Tall Tales” with old friend @edhelms is now out everywhere at last. Turn it up loooud. 🫡🪕

It took years for this squirmy baby to come together - for anyone who has considered giving up on their dreams and is questioning everything? We salute you. Growing up is weird. You gotta keep singing toward the light. That’s where the good stuff is.

Ed is a longtime supporter of our crazy collective - we even played his wedding back in the day and now Z and his daughters go to the same dance class. LA is crazy like that.

Thanks for always inspiring us @john_prine on this one especially. When Z almost lost his wife as his daughter was born - we played a glorious weekend at @winterwondergrass in Colorado and man, it brought up a lot of intense feelings. Is it even OK to want to make music and leave your little family behind for a few days? What if it never actually works out?

Hope you can share this song with an amigo if it hits you right - we don’t have a big ol label budget behind us, just doing our best. Thanks and see you out there.

“What now, Chad?” That’s one of the last things I remember hearing in Brian’s voice. Melinda had just died, and while I scrambled in the moment to mention something logistical about the next move for the day, I could see in his face he was talking about more.

We didn’t see much of each other after his birthday party this time last year, and a week ago I learned, right before boarding a plane at Burbank Airport, that he wasn’t awake anymore. We took off right over his house on Mulholland Drive, but he’d caught the early flight.

I remembered going with him to a doctor visit late one afternoon, and on the way home, grabbing us some dinner from the hot bar at Gelson’s. We ate in the car, in what felt like perfect silence, without the usual eleven-or-so dogs barking from the family kitchen.

Brian loved the noise—the tv was usually on too, especially during Jeopardy. But at any volume, it never did compete with the dogs. When I think of the soundtrack of that house, it genuinely and sincerely is the music of those pets and their sounds.

Normally sometime after Final Jeopardy, before going home for the day, I’d often pop my head down the hall and, if he was still in the easy chair, say goodnight. I’d long ago given up saying, “Night, Brian. See you tomorrow.” It eventually sounded presumptuous, and I guess it always is. So more recently, when we’d say goodbye, I instead took to “Night, Brian. Sleep well man.”

Goodnight, Brian. Sleep well. My life is forever better for knowing you. You soaked up so much of the beauty in this world, poured it out til you were empty, and you keep filling us all right back up, even in your absence. Inspiration is real, and your spirit will no doubt keep keeping us alive, and then go on and outlive us all. Only thing I wonder meanwhile is: what now? taken in Los Angeles, California by @radchichard

The Crows run this street. Every now and then, you can look up and catch em dogfighting with the hawks that try and get too close. Heard something rowdy up in this tree and turns out they were out here trading words with not one but THREE whole owls. taken in Highland Park, L.A. by @radchichard

To the big pile of friends, family, neighbors, and other loved ones who have reached out to check in —thank you. So far so stable over here. That big dark smear in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is smoke that used to be the houses of neighbors. The heavier bits are still raining down in little ash flakes on the sidewalk here. Everything burns. Big salute to our firefighters who know it better than anyone—big hug to everyone else. Breathe one real good breath if you can, and if not, you’re in good company. taken in Los Angeles, California by @radchichard

“Unavoidable.” Collab with a stranger, collage sans glue, August 2024.

This one started so quick and easy that we just kept on going. It was complete long before we stopped, but it’s real easy to get carried away adding—unavoidable, they say. Eventually though, you realize that now you’re looking at too much, and that a long time ago, it was plenty. by @radchichard

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, bombed during WWII. Most of the mosaics on the ceiling aren’t saints or disciples, but heads of state, rulers of people, wielders of heavy power. Caesars. They’re all dead now.

Didn’t wanna leave Glasgow. Some of the warmest and most hospitable strangers I’ve ever been around, which is really saying something. My own little sad kindness made more sense here than just about anywhere I’ve been, and this lad hopes it ain’t for the last time.

Well, if there’s one for the books, i think this is it. As a kid mowing lawns under every Saturday sun, @thebeachboys were often the ones taking my mind off the sweat. At the time, I was dreaming big enough to hopefully see them play someday, so if you’d told me then that one day I sure would, I’d have believed you. If you’d told me under what circumstances, I’d have laughed, said I am not nearly ready to dream that big. So a bunch more hot Saturdays went by, the grass kept growing, and I kept mowing. Then, suddenly it seems, I woke up with my bandmates in a beachside paradise to play an opening set for Uncle Mike and his half of the Boys. Bruce Johnston is a gem. The new players are legends (even without Uncle Jessie). The Good Vibrations orchestra brought us straight into the Pet Sounds control room with a wall of sound. And with the enormous spirit of @brianwilsonlive forever in those songs, the place was surging. Did we even enjoy Kokomo? Yes, yes we did. And off the Florida keys to boot. taken in Kokomo by @radchichard
