Hashimoto Contemporary is excited to announce the representation of Mexico City-based artist Carlos Rodriguez (@radrigue5). ⁠
⁠
Exploring the realms of sexual desire, gender, and identity, Rodriguez employs drawings, paintings, and ceramics that pay homage to the male form. Drawing inspiration from classical painting, naïve art, and elements of adult entertainment, his work captures the essence of men immersed in natural expressions of play and fantasy. Rodriguez’s approach to painting is hands-on and immersive, involving every aspect of creation from washing, cutting, and stretching his linen by hand, to preparing rabbit-skin glue and mixing his pigments.⁠

The gallery presented a solo presentation of Rodriguez’s works at Zona Maco in February 2024 to great acclaim, and looks forward to future exhibitions of Rodriguez’s fantastic artwork. ⁠

I have been taking—and collecting—photographs from this particular point of view. I’ve explored this idea in the past, including in a painting with a cooking/food theme. For me, it is a way of creating a narrative around the space surrounding the tummy. I call it Belly Moments, where the body and the table become part of the same visual language.

I’m bringing this perspective back in a new work for the upcoming exhibition Table Manners, a group exhibition opening next Saturday, August 29, at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco @hashimotocontemporary

I met Adrian and Jessica around 2018 @roughtradegear @bearhoncho and we’ve been creating funny and sexy gear together ever since. My recent work has slowly become less explicit, but it’s still rooted in aspects of masculinity, identity, and community.

This year, they asked me to create an image that expresses the essence of the store for the annual Mr. Rough Trade Gear Leather Contest 2027. For this special occasion, we’re also releasing a limited-edition print featuring the Leather Man icon, printed in Texas by master printer Tony Clough @tonyclough @seriopress

For over 20 years, Rough Trade Gear has worked hard to build a solid community of friends and clients, promoting leather culture through events and collaborations with different artists. Plus One @hashimotocontemporary group show who marks my first collaboration with photographer Gustavo Garcia-Villa @lamasdolorosa @gustavogarciavilla (who has been my plus one for many years 🐶) While our practices explore the male body, desire, and queer culture through different visual languages—mine through painting and drawing, his through contemporary photography—we share a common interest in intimacy and everyday experience.

Developed from Gustavo’s archive of instant photographs, these works investigate the translation of an image from one medium to another. Each photograph acts as a fragment of memory—a record that this is happening. The paintings are not illustrations of those moments, but emotional reconstructions of what remains. If the photograph preserves a lived instant, the painting responds: this is what remains.
