Random food dump: slowly getting back to cooking everyday. This congee was 😋😋😋. Made fresh tomato sauce with cherry tomatoes and lastly my purple themed Sunday dinner was 🥰. Multigrain rice (that turned everything purple) kale and purple cabbage, black eyed peas and roasted lemon herb chicken. by @raegomes

It would be literally impossible to tell you all the reasons why the Lower Eastside Girls Club (@girlsclubny) has been the perfect home for the Community Kitchen (@communitykitchennyc) pilot. (Rae and Mavis-Jay and I explain a little here.) And because of that, we’re throwing a fundraiser for them. Tickets are almost sold out, but if you can’t make it (for that reason or otherwise), please, please consider a donation to this fantastic organization that we love so much (there’s a link in my bio).

New York’s @communitykitchennyc believes fine dining should be available to everyone. The nonprofit restaurant, helmed by @markbittman and @raegomes, offers a 9-course meal for $15, $45, or $125. The clientele get to decide which price they pay.

The restaurant model is the only one of its kind here in the U.S., but it’s part of an international community of similar restaurants that aim to address food insecurity by making fine dining accessible to every patron, no matter their financial status.

Food justice means ending the notion that wealth determines who gains access to food and who eats well.

That’s why Brooklyn Supported Agriculture was beyond proud to support and congratulate Community Kitchen @communitykitchennyc last night during their Friends and Family dinner soft open whose goal is to distribute food more equitably.

Their sliding scale model makes fresh, thoughtfully prepared meals accessible to everyone:
$15 if income is a barrier
$45 to cover true costs
$125 if you’d pay this in a high-end NYC restaurant

No questions. Just community.

Immense thank yous to Founder Mark Bittman, Executive Director @raegomes, Culinary Director and James Beard Award Winning Chef @chefmavisjay,
Assistant General Manager, Al Nguyen and Operation Strategist, Abdullah for the invite and the warm welcome.

The pilot is officially open. Reserve your spot witness this uniquely delicious and accessible fine dining experience now in their bio! by @raegomes

Overwhelmed. Intentional. Gratitude. These words characterized my birthday weekend. I’m so thankful to everyone who showed up for me this weekend in the ways they could, in the ways that these times allow for. We gathered. We ate. We memorialized special moments in the past and signified what we want for our future. I really had little to say to everyone in my little birthday speech, because so much was felt and words didn’t do enough. Thank you for holding me in such beautiful ways throughout my life here. And for friends and family not physically there to celebrate, just know your love and presence was felt. Thanks to my boo for the dope pictures at my party and my birthday day💕. For this fortieth year on earth , I plan to reflect back into the world the love you all give me. Thank you. by @raegomes

Some signs of life. As long as I’m here, breathing, living, loving, there will be good food. There will be cute doggy photos. And there will be repurposed left overs. There may not be the most attractive or competent food pics, but the food will be on point and maybe one day my photo skills will match up 🤭. Til’ then, cook a steak for someone you care about, roast a chicken and catch up with a friend. Get off the internet and into people connections. I’m here for it!💕☀️❤️ by @raegomes

This song by Blood orange would make me tear up every time I heard it. The music video featured the singer returning to Guyana, his mother’s birthplace and discovering it for himself. For years I dreamt of being like him, learning about a place that was so much a part of my identity, but that I was a stranger to. The “land of many waters” did not disappoint. So much of who I am is explained in the landscape, the people, the history, the food. I get it. I get me. I don’t know how else to say this (but I’m finding the words). There are many more pics of family, cousins, my first home, and my grandparent’s last home that I’ll keep private for now. But the connections were palpable, the earth was teeming with memories and paying attention was all that was asked of me. Soooooo much gratitude to my “Godsis” Lisa for being my tour guide, my spirit guide, my light in the haze of expectation, big feelings, nostalgia, and family history. She was there from the beginning, and pointed me in all the directions I needed to go. Thanks Deli for being a #bosslady and taking us from point A to B most expeditiously🤭. Thanks to my Guyanese fam for your generosity and embracing me and the kid with no expectations, no requests. It was a homecoming for the ages, and I’m so grateful to have experienced it with my son 🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾 by @raegomes

BUGS is a family reunion. The beauty, the struggle, and the grounding you find is emblematic of the Black food justice landscape. This year, I spoke on a panel for Flourish Film Fest and the launch of the @blackfoodjustice Journal. I wrote a piece for it that’s so sacred and special to me in what it works to detail: that there is no separation of life, work, spirit, the land, and food. More on this soon! Also had the chance to facilitate a workshop on the future of Food policy Councils with my dear friend David from Strivequity Consulting. This year in Houston was a leveling up of our collective work and it showed more than ever how much richness we can cultivate among us, when we honor our roots, speak the truth, and respect each other’s lanes and journeys. So excited for what’s to come♥️💚🖤 @blackurbangrowers by @raegomes
