A favorite way to quickly dye papers.

I’m sharing a few simple steps to create your own hand dyed paper in just minutes.

1.Add a bit of water to the bottom of an art pan or tray.
2. Spritz the art pan with dye or add a few drops of ink or paint. I’m using @ranger_ink Dylusions Spray Inks.
3. Begin layering sheets of paper.
4. Move the ink and water around to coat the entire sheet.
5. Add another layer of paper directly on top@of the previous layer and add more ink and water as needed.
6. Repeat with additional layers.
7. Let dry in the pan or gently lift and hang dry.

You can mix colors as you go or create batches of monochromatic colors for future projects like I’m doing here. Simple and fun!

Nothing inspires me more than to me surrounded by the tools of my trade. Seeing what I have an available as I create is almost always the catalyst I need to lean into a project. Enjoy the smaller details of the studio as I head off grid for a few days.

Some days it seems that there just isn’t enough time for art, but truth be told, I don’t let that stop me from being creative. Sure I might not have time to paint every day, but creativity looks different for me depending on what’s happening in that moment. Creativity can look like a nature walk, exploring and gathering inspiration. It can look like taking photographs so that I can study light and shadow. Or it can look like color.

I tried something new for the month of August. I got reacquainted with my acrylic paints and began mixing colors, swatching them and giving them fancy (and not so fancy) names. And while there was little “art” involved, there was a fulfilling form of creativity in the act of experimenting with color. And by the way, I could find names for things all day long. 🤣

Anyway, once again, it felt like I showed up, which some days can feel like a bit of a challenge 🫣

I found a few moments to paint in my beloved antique ledger. This was carried home from our trip to France a few years ago and it was a very special gift. I love the script on the pages , peeking through the paint to become part of the work itself. I love the crinkly sound of the paper as it dries, as if it’s telling the story of the page out loud. And I love that every single time I pick this book up my mind is flooded with beautiful memories.

This paper is so sheer, more delicate than tracing paper - almost like tissue paper and yet it takes the wet medium so well. Today I used my white gouache and my @mijello_mission watercolors. If you’d like to see an updated flip through of this journal leave a comment and let me know!

Mini painted papers.

Recycled drawing paper and acrylic paint. The paper dries so nice and crinkly. I like to use these for collage elements, little pages in my art journal, and I will sometimes even cut out the individual paint swatches to use in my layouts.

I have so many new pieces finished up in my Botanical series.

Each piece is hand sketched before I begin to stitch. I paint with the thread more than I follow a an outline of traditional stitches, although I do turn to basic stitches often for filling in big areas. And I always veer from the path of the sketch, using it as a guide more than a map or pattern.

Plein air continuous line sketches. Only one of the many techniques we interpret in my Field Notes Workshop.

Here are a few more pages in my @theonionskinjournal journal. And I’m answering
a few more of the most frequently asked questions I get about the journal and its paper.

Do your pages ever stick together?

When I paint with watercolor the pages never stick together after the paper is dry. When I paint with acrylic paint I’m careful to let the paint dry completely before closing the journal. Occasionally, the pages will stick together loosely but they come apart easily and I’ve never had one tear. Optionally, you could place a sheet of deli paper between the pages if desired.
