Nurtured Flames: The Medicine of Fire is an exhibition by Meztli Projects, presented at the Armory Center for the Arts, featuring new works created in 2026 by an intergenerational cohort of eleven Indigenous artists.

Continuing Indigenous practices of collaborative art-making and learning, the exhibition explores the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and fire. Moving beyond the binary of “good fire” and “bad fire,” the artists draw on Indigenous knowledge systems that understand fire as a force of stewardship, care, renewal, repair, and regeneration.

Developed through dialogue with one another, as well as with Elders and culture bearers, the participating artists exchanged ideas, shared evolving works, and reflected on the distinct cultural perspectives of their communities. This collaborative process fostered artistic dialogue across generations while deepening each artist’s creative practice.

Together, the works challenge dominant narratives that frame fire primarily as something to fear or control. Instead, they present fire as a complex and generative presence that has long sustained Indigenous relationships with land, ecology, memory, and community.

The exhibition features works by joel garcia, River Garza, Ishi Glinsky, Artemiza (Ciara Green), Adrienne Kinsella, Kenneth Lopez, Emma Robbins, Kimberly Robertson, Aanii Tate, Isaac Michael Ybarra, and Alexandria Ybarra.

A Map to the Next World (Exhibition)
Saturday, August 1, 2026 | 5:00 - 8:00 PM

North Figueroa Bookshop
6040 N Figueroa Street
Los Angeles, CA 90042

North Figueroa Bookshop’s next exhibition, “A Map to the Next World”, is inspired by the poem of the same name by Joy Harjo (Mvskoke). Please join us on August 1 from 5 to 8 pm for the opening reception, where there will be presentations, poetry, and live music, featuring works by Kimberly Robertson (Mvskoke), Joel Garcia (Huichol), and some of our friends.

The works in this show encounter Los Angeles in unique ways, through the lenses of eco art, found/foraged materials, traditional practices, memory, and community. Through this show, may we face the profound ecological grief and social disconnectedness together in our path towards the next world. taken in North Figueroa Bookshop by @rageone

My dear friend Kanoelani, founder of Hoʻakā Mana and Pomahina Designs, is a teacher, cultural practitioner, and first responder. She is the person Molokai turns to in times of crisis, feeding kupuna/the elderly, leading flood recovery efforts, and standing with Lahaina fire survivors, while keeping Hawaiian language and tradition alive for the next generation.

After being severely damaged by the storm, the home she and her four daughters rent is being sold, and her landlord has offered to sell it to her directly. She has until the end of this month to secure the money needed to purchase and repair her home.

Please consider supporting and sharing, so that she can remain on Molokai.

Craft Contemporary’s fourth Clay Biennial, 𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂, brings together 14 artists working across ceramics, sculpture, installation, and land-based practices that explore earth, memory, ancestry, and material as living carriers of cultural knowledge—shaped through making, tending, and care featuring PaiPai Elder Teresa Castro, Caddo Elder Jeri Redcorn, and Christine Howard Sandoval (Chalon Nation) among other Indigenous artists.

The exhibition also features six contributing artists (including Tongva artist Megan Dorame and Ho-chunk/Pechanga artist Sky Hopinka) whose text-based works expand 𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂 through language, reflection, and citation, with works included in the exhibition catalog.
