nurtured flames: the medicine of fire ~ a new exhibition by @meztliprojects ft. works by joel garcia, river garza, ishi glinsky, artemiza, adrienne kinsella, kenneth lopez, emma robbins, kimberly robertson, aanii tate, isaac michael ybarra + alexandria ybarra. i was lucky to attend the curatorial walkthrough of the exhibition, led by @rageone with @adriennekinsella which provided an in-depth look at how each artist approached the idea of moving past the notion that fire is inherently “bad,” and instead focused on all the ways fire is a necessary force of stewardship, renewal, repair, and regeneration. one of my favourite parts of the exhibition was seeing the connecting moments between each work, whether that was symbols of abalone to acknowledge tongva land, or referencing another artist’s work to create something entirely new, all indications of the intergenerational and collaborative dialogues that took place in the development of these new works. ‘nurtured flames’ runs until january 2027 at @armoryarts with more pubic programs to be announced! ~~~ 🔥

The Armory is pleased to present ‘Nurtured Flames: The Medicine of Fire,’ an exhibition by Meztli Projects, opening in the Armory’s Caldwell Gallery on Friday, September 4th.

Featuring new works created in 2026 by an intergenerational cohort of eleven Indigenous artists, this exhibition explores the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and fire. Moving beyond the binary of “good fire” and “bad fire,” the artists draw on Indigenous knowledge systems that understand fire as a force of stewardship, care, renewal, repair, and regeneration.

The exhibition features works by joel garcia, River Garza, Ishi Glinsky, Artemiza (Ciara Green), Adrienne Kinsella, Kenneth Lopez, Emma Robbins, Kimberly Robertson, Aanii Tate, Isaac Michael Ybarra, and Alexandria Ybarra.

Different but SAME is a thought-provoking exhibition exploring the shared human experience across cultures, identities, and backgrounds. By challenging ideas of “otherness,” Different but SAME invites reflection, empathy, and meaningful conversation about the power of art to bring communities together.

Craft Contemporary’s fourth Clay Biennial, 𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂, brings together 14 artists working across ceramics, sculpture, installation, and land-based practices that explore earth, memory, ancestry, and material as living carriers of cultural knowledge—shaped through making, tending, and care featuring PaiPai Elder Teresa Castro, Caddo Elder Jeri Redcorn, and Christine Howard Sandoval (Chalon Nation) among other Indigenous artists.

The exhibition also features six contributing artists (including Tongva artist Megan Dorame and Ho-chunk/Pechanga artist Sky Hopinka) whose text-based works expand 𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂 through language, reflection, and citation, with works included in the exhibition catalog.

Join Craft Contemporary for the opening reception and be the first to experience the exhibition. Explore new works, meet the artists and collaborators, and enjoy refreshments in the museum’s courtyard.

@rageone You are speaking on something you truly do not understand. The Gabrieleno descendants that received state proclamation (AJR96) are the original Kizh Nation that maintains the original Tribal Government. The Gabrieleno Tribal Council, as that recognized body, today carries and uses our ancestral name, the Kizh (Quiichi) Nation.

What we are witnessing today is another form of colonization. Not with chains or missions this time, but through the rewriting of identity. Through outsiders, academics, and political movements speaking over the actual descendants of this land and attempting to replace our ancestral identity with a modern misnomer that our ancestors themselves did not historically carry the way it is promoted today.

You speak of “sovereignty and self-determination”, yet ignore the voices of the lineal descendants who have remained here generation after generation protecting our ancestors, our sacred places, and our history.

True self-determination begins with truth.

It begins with respecting the people whose bloodlines, families, and ancestors come directly from this land and not with redefining us into something more politically acceptable or easier for the public to consume. Our people are not a trend, a movement, or an invention from unfinished academic notes. We are the descendants of the original people of this land, and no amount of repetition can erase that truth.

We’re excited to share the artists participating in tierra, the fourth iteration of Craft Contemporary’s Clay Biennial, opening May 30 and on view May 31 through October 25, 2027.

Bringing together 20 practitioners, tierra expands beyond clay as a singular medium to encompass broader approaches grounded in land and earth. Across the work presented, earth-based materials appear not only as matter, but as carriers of relation, marked by touch, shaped by labor, and mended through care.

The exhibition includes 14 participating artists whose work engages material as a holder of cultural memory and as a site where knowledge takes shape through making, tending, and embodied practice. It also includes six contributing artists whose text-based works are interwoven throughout the exhibition, expanding how knowledge is held and carried across forms.

The exhibition is organized by a curatorial committee led by Andres Payan Estrada @andres_payan ,and includes Frida Cano @arttextum , Joel Garcia @rageone , Mercedes Dorame @mercedes.dorame ,and Cannupa Hanska Luger @cannupahanska. The invited artists emerged through ongoing dialogue with the committee, forming a constellation of work that positions material as a holder of cultural memory, and as a site where knowledge is shaped through making, tending, and care.

tierra is co-organized in collaboration with the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts.

As we mark the last Friday of Ramadan, we find ourselves reflecting on this solidarity event from a few weeks ago that we were honored to be partners on. An intimate night filled with joy, resistance, and warmth to celebrate those who have been, and continue to fight the good fight.
