The alley in Mashhad smelled of saffron long before you reached the grandma's house, the dry, crisp air carrying that rich aroma from three doors away. Madarjan was making sholeh zard for a nazri, fulfilling a wish granted, and the courtyard hummed with quiet hope—including my young aunt’s secret prayer to marry the love of her life.
Standing by Atefeh, my mirror, just six months apart, I waited my turn to grip the long metal spoon and stir the fragrant gold. Then came the real magic: the cinnamon. While tradition called for holy names, my mind saw graphic flowers. When the adults objected, Madarjan smiled and said, "Let her design what she wants," gifting me a fierce, proud spark of creativity.
With our hands full of bowls, ,Atefeh and I walked door to door, handing the warm Zaffron rice puddings to neighbors who smiled and murmured, “Ghabool bashes/May it be accepted.” I miss my Madarjan, and Ati ❤️❤️ کوچه های مشهد خیلی قبل‌تر از اینکه به خانه برسی، بوی زعفران می‌داد؛ هوای خشک و سبک شهر، آن عطر ناب را از سه کوچه آن‌طرف‌تر به مشام می‌رساند. مادرجان به خاطر برآورده شدن حاجتی، نذری داشت و شله‌زرد می‌پخت و حیاط پر از زمزمه‌ی امید بود؛ از جمله آرزوی پنهان خاله ‌ی جوانی که دل در گرو عشق داشت و لابد وصال یار را تمنا می‌کرد.
کنار عاطفه همزاد کوچکم و آن هم‌بازی که فقط شش ماه با او فاصله داشتم—به صف ایستاده بودیم تا نوبتمان برسد،ملاقه را بگیریم و آن طلای خوشبو را هم بزنیم. بعد نوبت جادوی اصلی می رسید: پاشیدن دارچین. سنتی‌ها نوشتن نام‌های مقدس را می‌خواستند، اما خیال من نقش گل‌های گرافیکی را در سر داشت. وقتی بزرگ‌ترها لب به اعتراض گشودند، مادرجان لبخندی زد و گفت: «بگذار هر طور دوست دارد طراحی کند»؛ و همین، جرقه‌ی استوار و مغرور خلاقیت را در جانم روشن کرد.

OUR FAVORITE DAY OF THE WEEK

It’s Monday morning and Musa has just tied his shoes for the first time. He’s excited to tell Zohra, his classmate and neighbor. But when they meet outside, Musa can tell Zohra is distracted. She’s thinking about tomorrow. Tuesday is her favorite day of the week because she gets to wave at the sanitation workers, who call her a “‘superstar recycling sorter,’” but she won’t be home. Musa is empathetic, saying, “‘I’d feel sad if I missed my favorite day too.’” His favorite day is Wednesday, when his dad takes him to swim class. After the lesson, they always had fun splashing together.

As Musa and Zohra walk through the neighborhood, they meet more of their friends, who are excited to share stories about their favorite days. Zadie can’t wait for Grandma Day on Thursday. Mo wishes every day could be Friday because “‘Shabbat dinner was the best of all dinners—of all meals, even!’” Luna looks forward to Saturday when she goes to the Chinese cultural center to learn Mandarin. When the group arrives at school, they meet up with Moisés, who offers that Sunday is his favorite day because after church, he watches his family play fútbol at the park.

Soon, it’s circle time. Ms. Gupta starts off with the day of the week and a surprising admission that Monday is her favorite because she feels happy to see all her students again, a feeling that means she’s “‘doing something [she] loves with the people [she cares] about.’”

Ashley Franklin’s charming story captures the sweet and serious cadence of conversations with and between young children. Her endearing cast of characters shows pride and enthusiasm for family activities that make a certain day their favorite.

Rahele Jomepour Bell’s warm-toned depictions of each child’s favorite activity immerse kids in the sights, sounds, and feelings generated in each place through realistic details that can inspire conversations at home or in the classroom.
