Today I release a third full length album, New York Noise Pollution Counterpoint.

This is an album presented as a 2D RPG video game. Find the tracks to reduce noise pollution and create your own version of the album.

This is my first work about New York, a choice I made five years after moving here and struggling to find my space within the saturation. Each track was performed with different experiences of NYC in mind. “Beaten by a Robot” is about being replaced by computers. “Density 29.5” is about the city’s population density. “Useless” is about identity beyond vocation. The title track is literal.

This album also holds my first recordings on the tabla, an instrument I have a sensitive relationship to which I hope can be heard on “Impromptu,” “Cause and Effect,” and “Tempo.”

The game is still buggy, there are still so many sounds, characters, and things I want to add, but I need to let it go for now and touch some grass. I don’t know where this project will lead, if it will reach or make sense, but I hope the open-endedness might provide some space to anyone feeling stuck. Solve an AI riddle, meet a punk monk, survive a corporate climb.

The listening mechanic only works on the desktop app so download for the full philosophical experience on Mac, Windows, or Linux.

New York Noise Pollution Counterpoint is now streaming on Bandcamp and the major noise pollution platforms.

This is my first project about New York, a record of its influence after four years.

It is a renewed commitment to my favorite instrument when time, money, and space to practice are scarce.

It is a record of a backwards step, onto an instrument that I can practice in my apartment.

I think of each recording as an instrument in itself, the album a full kit assembled by the player. The form is the purpose — the identity and the larger function of the work. I am starting to see responsibilities as opportunities, accountability as purpose, and I wonder how a piece’s form can express the responsibilities of its player.

This question built the game. Improvising is a process of decision-making, critical thinking, and accountability, providing an opportunity to grow as a person through a stream of intentional choices. I want playing to be listening to be improvising to be growing.

Thank you to the alpha testers who played and gave constructive feedback for the barebones version of the game and thank you Isaac Gerard for engineering the session for the drums for the Pong theme on the end screen.
