//INTERVIEW

Manuel Zamudio

Manuel Zamudio is a self-taught artist born in Mexico City and raised in McAllen, South Texas. His journey began with graffiti before moving into oil painting, where he developed his cinematic, neon-lit worlds. His paintings bring together realism, street art, speculative fiction, and stories about memory, emotion, and imagination.

Q: Your paintings often feel like scenes from a film. How do you build that cinematic quality into a composition?

A: One thing I’ve always admired is that a great film frame rarely feels like a perfectly composed photograph. Sometimes cropping part of a figure or allowing the environment to dominate the image creates a stronger emotional response. I want my paintings to feel less like standalone images and more like stills from a film that exists in the viewer’s imagination.

“Memories of My Father”

Mixed media on canvas
2026

Sometimes, even when someone is your parent, it doesn’t mean you get to fully know them.

I built this image from old photographs of my father and the memories I have of him. As I get older, I think more about the life he lived beyond what I could understand the things he carried, the things we never spoke about, and the questions I can no longer ask.

This painting, and much of this body of work, reaches somewhere more personal within the existential, sci-fi world I’ve been building. Here, memory becomes a place where someone can remain long after their life has ended. What I remember, what I imagine, and what I will never know exist together.

My memories of my father are haunting, beautiful, funny, and full of sadness. They continue to shape my work and the person I’m becoming as an artist, a husband, and now a father myself. Although our time together was short, my understanding of him keeps changing as I live through things we never had the chance to share. I find myself returning to those memories with new questions, a little more understanding, and a growing awareness of how much of him I carry into a life he never got to see.

Working on “Neon Memory,” the title painting of my upcoming solo show. We’re two weeks out from opening, and I can’t wait to share the full show with y’all.

In this painting, the portrait and the world behind her hold different layers of time. Tattoos, weathered skin, and fragments of landscape become records of what remains with us a past that continues to live within the present.

Wrapping up “All Things in Memory” for an upcoming exhibition at the @bishopmuseum with @thinkspace_art and @worldwidewalls

This piece continues the ideas I’ve been exploring these past few months memories of the lives we’ve lived and the futures we once imagined. Over time, those memories fade, shift, and become something else, yet they continue to shape who we are. I’ve been thinking about how much of the past we carry into the present, sometimes without even realizing it.

Painting has become a way for me to spend time with those fragments to give them a place to exist before they change again.

Stoked to be part of this exhibition alongside such an incredible lineup. As always, thank you to @thinkspace_art for including me and giving my work the opportunity to travel further. Can’t wait to share the finished piece with you all. by @raid_33333

Neon Memory moves through past, present, and future as if they were unfolding in the same instant.

Within these painted worlds are memories inherited, moments lived, and fragments of lives that were never lived alongside the futures we imagine, still waiting to be made real. These thoughts stayed with me throughout the making of this body of work: how we carry the past, how we shape what comes next, and how much of being human exists in the space between.

I can’t wait to share Neon Memory with you.

“Revelations of the Past”

In this piece, I brought a more classical feeling to the portrait and landscape while keeping the colors that have become part of my visual language.

As a Mexican immigrant, I’ve wanted to explore this part of my life through my own style and perspective. Throughout “Neon Memory,” my past meets the memories of family and people close to me the lives they lived before leaving their country, and what they carried with them.

Giving those histories a place in my paintings has helped me begin to heal some of the personal and family wounds tied to immigration. Approaching them with hope and determination has opened something in me, allowing me to grow both as a person and as an artist.

For me, painting is that constant search inward for truth, for growth, and for a way to make sense of the world around us.
