My kids aren’t at school today because schools have been shut down due to increasingly hazardous outdoor pollution. This is the Malaysia equivalent of “snow day”, I guess, except snow doesn’t have tiny particles that can get stuck in your lungs and cause All Kinds Of Health Damage, I guess??? There’s a privilege that comes with being able to breathe clean air and enjoy clear blue skies. When you’re living in South East Asia and told that the yearly haze is just “how things are” it enrages me because this is a DELIBERATE DECISION. Corporations burning ancient rainforests for short-term profit harms us all. But hey, it’s a dystopian reality anyway. #haze #malaysia by @raidahwrites

It’s so amazing seeing my debut MG fantasy up there 🥰 Libraries are incredible spaces and I’ve loved them since I was a kid in Singapore and then a tween and teen in Sydney. Our final contributor for Issue 2 is @raidahwrites, reviewing Omar Musa’s Fierceland.

Raidah Shah Idil was born in Singapore, grew up in Sydney, Australia, studied and worked in Amman, Jordan and now lives in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia with her husband, three children and mother-in-law. Raidah earned her BA in English and BSc in Psychology from the University of New South Wales and her Diploma of Counselling from the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors. Raidah is a Basira Education-certified instructor for Why Islam Is True and teaches at KL Kuttāb, a holistic weekend madrasah in Kuala Lumpur. Raidah loves ginger tea, noodle soup and dreams of uninterrupted sleep. Raidah’s debut Middle Grade fantasy novel, How To Free A Jinn, features the unseen adventures of 12 year old Insyirah, a neurodivergent Malay Muslim hijabi girl. Raidah is represented by Allison Hellegers of Stimola Literary Studio.

Today marks the second anniversary of How To Free A Jinn! Thank you @allisondhpics for championing my book and @allenandunwin for launching my debut middle grade fantasy career! I’m so, so grateful for all the booksellers, librarians, book reviewers, parents and readers who have shared their love for my book and how much it’s touched them and the young readers in their lives. Special thanks goes to @readingskids for awarding the Readings Children’s Prize last year 😭 🏆 What a gift. I’ve learned so much in this past two years - debuting as a perimenopausal neurodivergent author amidst the daily juggle of childcare and eldercare is horror story material 😂 Also, author anxiety can morph into “Will I ever sell another book again??” 🫠 Alhamdulilah for all the blessings in my past, present and future.
