A child sits before their teacher, listening, watching, absorbing. In these quiet moments, so much more than knowledge is being passed on.

Patience, humility, respect, and adab are nurtured through the beautiful companionship of teacher and student.

At KL Kuttab, we cherish this timeless tradition of learning from heart to heart.

In our final review for Issue 2: Beyond Noise, Raidah Shah Idil reviews Omar Musa’s Fierceland.

In it, @raidahwrites comments on how Omar Musa brings together themes of identity, inheritance and Islamophobia within the mysteries of the jungle. She also reflects on her own sense of place in Malaysia and Australia and what it means to live between these two worlds as a child and as an adult.

I came across How to Free a Jinn by Raidah Shah Idil at my local indie bookstore and remembered it a few days ago as I was trying to figure out what to use my Everand unlocks on.

This was a great spooky middle grade about a girl who relocated to her family home in Malaysia from Sydney and discovers she has the ability to see jinn–and that one is connected to their family. One that probably needs to go.

I’m based in the United States but I love reading books that take place outside the US–and I thought you might too!

Organized roughly geographically moving around the globe away from me. Some of these authors have multiple books set in those countries, so be sure to check them all out!

(I hope I didn’t misremember any of these. I tried to double check when I was unsure. Please correct me if I’m wrong 😅)

This is far from a comprehensive list and is just based on ones that came to mind. Please tell me what I need to add to my TBR!
