Plant of the Week: Ruby Necklace (Crassothonna capensis) 💜🌼

With its cascading purple stems, plump, bead-like leaves, and cheerful yellow blooms, Ruby Necklace brings a colorful twist to the succulent family. Its trailing growth makes it a beautiful choice for hanging baskets and containers, where its vibrant strands can spill over the edges.

Native to South Africa, Ruby Necklace thrives in bright light and well-draining soil. Like many succulents, it prefers to dry out between waterings and can tolerate periods of drought. Plenty of sunlight helps bring out its rich purple coloring, while its small, daisy-like flowers add an unexpected pop of yellow.

💡 Fun fact: Ruby Necklace gets its name from its color-changing foliage! Its leaves can shift from green to deep ruby-purple with increased sunlight, making its appearance change depending on where it's grown.

Plant of the Week: Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) 🦓🌿

With its glossy green leaves, striking white veins, and bright yellow blooms, Zebra Plant brings a tropical pop of pattern and color wherever it grows. Its bold foliage is the real standout, giving the plant its zebra-inspired name.

Zebra Plant grows best in bright, indirect light with consistently moist, well-draining soil. Native to tropical regions of Brazil, it thrives in warm, humid conditions and appreciates protection from harsh direct sunlight. With the right care, its vibrant yellow flower bracts can add an extra burst of color above its already eye-catching foliage.

💡 Fun fact: Those bright yellow “flowers” are actually colorful bracts. The plant’s true flowers emerge from between them and are much smaller and shorter-lived.

Plant of the Week: Red-Centered Hibiscus (Alyogyne hakeifolia) 💜

With its delicate mauve blooms and distinctive dark center, Red-Centered Hibiscus brings a beautiful pop of color to warm, water-wise landscapes. Its fine, needle-like foliage gives the shrub an airy texture that makes the flowers stand out even more.

Red-Centered Hibiscus grows best in full sun and well-draining soil, although it can tolerate some partial shade. Native to dry regions of Australia, it’s well adapted to warm, dry conditions and prefers not to sit in overly wet soil. Once established, it can develop into a medium-sized, upright shrub covered with blooms throughout its flowering season.

💡 Fun fact: Its name describes its leaves. The species name hakeifolia essentially means “Hakea-like leaves,” referring to its resemblance to plants in the Hakea genus.

Plant of the Week: Purple Heart (Tradescantia pallida) 💜

Known for its striking foliage and delicate three-petaled blooms, Purple Heart adds rich color and texture to garden beds, borders, containers, and hanging baskets. Its leaves can range from greenish-purple to deep purple, with small pink to lavender flowers adding another pop of color.

Purple Heart grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. More sunlight typically brings out its deepest purple color, while plants grown in shade may appear greener. It’s also relatively drought-tolerant once established and can be grown as a houseplant or annual in colder climates.

💡 Fun fact: It can root right from the stem. Sections of the stem can develop roots at the nodes, which makes Purple Heart especially easy to propagate from cuttings.
