Cooler weather means it’s time to adjust your watering!

As temperatures drop and the days get shorter, your garden’s water needs change, too. If your irrigation system is still running on its summer schedule, you could be giving your plants more water than they need.

Here’s your reminder to:
🌱 Reduce watering frequency as temperatures cool.
🌱 Turn off or adjust your irrigation after rain, and keep an eye on the forecast.

In my California garden, fall doesn’t mean turning off the irrigation completely. It means adjusting as the weather changes. I upgraded to the @raindripirrigation smart water timer so I can adjust schedules or set rain delays right from my phone. 👏🏻

A few small adjustments can help conserve water and keep your plants happy! Follow @mycaliforniagarden for tips and inspiration. Let’s grow together! 🌱❤️

How to add drip irrigation to your grow bags💦 This is part 2 of my Raindrip drip irrigation install.
After previously converting my in-ground raised bed to a drip system, I ran some of the extra supply tubing behind my grow bags. I utilized some extra supplies to add drip emitters to my tomato plants so I never have to water them by hand again 🙌.
Drip irrigation keeps the soil evenly moist, cuts water waste, and saves me a ton of time. Thanks again to @raindripirrigation for sending me the supplies 😁

My new favorite garden upgrade! 🪴
Converting my raised bed vegetable garden from an in-ground sprinkler system to drip irrigation — and it’s done! 💦
Drip systems put water right at the base of each plant instead of spraying the whole bed, which means less water waste, drier foliage (so less disease risk), and way more even watering across the whole raised bed. I’m so excited to finally have this installed! 🙌
Thanks to @raindripirrigation for sending this kit and automatic digital timer for me to try out. It’s definitely going to make my gardening life a lot easier! 💚👩🏻‍🌾 #gifted

What were you doing at 8pm on a Thursday?
Gardening in the dark, apparently! 🫣
The heat wave this week had me out here with a headlamp on just to check on my plants once it finally cooled down.
The days are getting shorter too, but I had some gardening tasks I needed to do.
I was finishing up installing my new drip irrigation system for my raised beds— thanks to @raindripirrigation
Full reveal of the setup coming soon! 🙌
I wanted to wait until it cooled off so, headlamp-gardening it is! 👩🏻‍🌾💡Just don’t forget the bug spray 😵‍💫
I guess that’s zone 9b garden life in late summer! 💚🌱

After years of extended sun exposure, some of my drip irrigation emitters had cracked and needed to be replaced. I was expecting this to be one of those tedious garden jobs that takes longer than it should. And I put it off for way too long.

But swapping it out with the Raindrip adjustable flow bubbler was surprisingly quick and easy. Just cut to remove the old piece and then slide on the new emitter.

💦 Pro tip: Before attaching the new emitter, use a lighter to gently warm the end of the tubing for just a few seconds. This softens the plastic enough to make sliding the new emitter on SO much easier. Just be careful not to hold the flame too long, you’re warming the tubing, not melting it! 🤪

And just like that… irrigation problem solved. Save this for the next time you need to repair your drip irrigation!

My flower garden has gone through some transformations over the years! I moved in with my now-husband 5 years ago and he’s been happy to give me the reins to make this my own 🦋 with the help of my parents & brother, we completely reorganized the garden and added irrigation from @raindripirrigation (not sponsored) which is a HUGE game-changer with this incredibly dry summer! Here are some of my favs from last year before we moved everything around #flowergarden #flowers #butterfly #zone8agardening #pollinatorgarden

#gifted Upgrading from a basic programmable timer to a WiFi-enabled smart timer has been so helpful!

I don’t have to monitor the ten day forecast before leaving for vacation hoping it’s right so I can set the watering schedule. If it’s unexpectedly hot (or cold), I can change watering without even being home.

Somehow my plants don’t care if I’m busy, traveling, or forgetful. 🤪 Having better control over irrigation helps keep them healthier while also conserving water by only watering when it’s actually needed.

If you’re already using drip irrigation, a smart timer is one of the easiest upgrades you can make!

Do you use a smart timer, or are you still adjusting everything manually? Follow @mycaliforniagarden for tips and inspiration. Let’s grow together! 🌱❤️

Friendly reminder: if you’re using drip irrigation, it’s time to check (and possibly change) your timer batteries! 🔋💧

I noticed the soil in one of my beds seemed dry, so I went to manually run an extra watering cycle. When nothing turned on, I immediately suspected the batteries, and was very relieved I caught the issue early.

And sure enough… just a few days later, a second of my timers needed new batteries too. 😅

On my system, there’s a battery indicator light:
🔋A slow blink (about every 4 seconds) = batteries are good
🪫A rapid flash or constant light = low batteries (replace)
🪫 No light at all = fully dead batteries (replace)

Every system is a little different, so check your manual, but here are some common warning signs to watch for:
🌱 Your system isn’t turning on or off as scheduled
🌱 The display looks faint or glitchy
🌱 Watering cycles seem shorter or inconsistent
🌱 Some areas are getting water while others aren’t
🌱 Your timer resets itself or goes blank

If you notice any of these, swap the batteries ASAP. I’m setting a calendar reminder to do this proactively each spring, because this is a quick task that can save your garden! 🙌
