Mother Nature forgot her paperwork.

Yesterday I visited my dad’s factory in West Kalimantan again.

ALL our raw materials come from natural forest ecosystems. We gather what nature provides. The forest stays a forest.

Some products have an organic certification.
Others don’t.

Here, the uncertified products are cheaper because they don’t carry the additional certification costs like audits, inspections, a lot of admin and more...

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘴, 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦, 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯’𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭…

An ingredient grown on a farm can be certified organic.
And an ingredient growing naturally in a rainforest can be uncertified…

Weird isn’t it?

Because organic certification verifies production and processing standards.
→ 𝗜𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

Yet how many of us picture exactly that when we see the label?

Certification matters.
And so does understanding what that actually tells us.

Where did it grow?
How was it collected?
Is the ecosystem still thriving?

The leaf on the packaging gets our attention.
The forest behind it deserves our curiosity.

Certification doesn’t always tell the whole story.
And non-certified doesn’t always means it’s not organic.

Because our trees still produce the same…
With or without label.

What are YOU imagining when you buy organic?

What does a day in Bali with me look like?

Apparently…

95 kilometres.
Almost 4 hours.
Approximately 700 scooters.
And absolutely zero glamorousness.

Because in Bali, 95 kilometres is not a drive.

It is a long-term commitment. 😂

Macet banget. Traffic everywhere.

Just so you know…

We are not scouting land to squeeze in another resort for outsiders who love the view but never learned how the landscape actually works.

We are scouting degraded plantations and polluted land to turn them back into healthy, diverse forest ecosystems. 🌱

Land where local communities can cultivate responsibly.
Where people can pray.
Where wildlife can return.
And where the forest can be safeguarded for generations.

Because a forest is not just a pretty collection of trees.

Today, Sofieke joined me. She is our International Sustainable Development intern from Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.

She is here to discover what sustainability looks like outside a classroom.

Spoiler: it looks like traffic, muddy shoes, long conversations with farmers, difficult decisions and occasionally wondering whether your spine will ever recover from another Balinese road. 😂

We have finally arrived in North Bali.

Tomorrow: more scouting, more conversations with local farmers and more searching for ways to create real impact.. one piece of land at a time.

Curious what Sofieke thinks of the unfiltered reality of fieldwork?

Keep an eye on our internship page!

So… how was your day?

Yesterday we had our annual EU family dinner, and it was amazing!

One evening with the people who work on Restore the Legacy from Europe, our team, partners and stakeholders, together around one table.

And seeing everyone together like this makes us incredibly proud.

Because restoring rainforest may happen in Indonesia, but making it possible takes an ecosystem of people.

Different backgrounds.
Different expertise.
Different roles.
One shared ambition.

From science and ecology to finance, partnerships, communication and strategy, every person brings another piece of the puzzle.

And that is exactly how we believe impact should grow.

By bringing the right people together around a shared mission.

And… building traditions along the way. 🌿

A huge thank you to our European team, partners and stakeholders for everything you bring to Restore the Legacy.

The family is growing.

So is the impact.

And yes… we may need a bigger table next year. 😉💚

Today’s classroom had no walls!

I spent the last couple of days kayaking through the mangroves, learning more about this precious ecosystem.

Since we at @restorethelegacy are also reforesting near coastal areas, including mangroves, understanding more about how these ecosystems actually work felt incredibly important.

So I went! Into the mangroves, on my kayak. 🛶

From mangrove crabs 🦀 to salt-loving plants, algae, crazy root systems and even holding jellyfish 🪼 I got to explore it all up close.

I learned A LOT… so instead of cramming it all into one post:

What would you like to know about mangroves?

Ask me anything below and I’ll share what I learned!

Did you know a pelican’s pouch can hold up to three times more water than its stomach?

This bird instantly brings me back to The Little Mermaid. 🧜🏼‍♀️

Remember Flounder? The little yellow-and-blue fish? And Scuttle, the slightly chaotic pelican who was constantly trying to help everyone… with questionable success sometimes? 😂

Well… Disney is never wrong. They’re very smart at integrating real knowledge into their entertaining movies.

When you spot pelicans hanging around a coastline, it’s usually a pretty good sign.

Because pelicans need fish.
Fish need healthy oceans.
Healthy oceans need coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows, and thriving nutrient cycles.

Disrupt one… and the whole system starts wobbling.

Usually, the first thing you’ll notice?

Less fish.

Then…

Less birds.

And pelicans kind of speed up this process, but they also help prevent the ecosystem from becoming unbalanced because of overgrown species.

Pelicans are masters of teamwork!

They often work together to herd schools of fish into shallow water…

Then…

𝘚𝘓𝘜𝘙𝘗.

That giant pouch comes flying in.

Fish gone.
Belly full.

They barely miss.

But pelicans are also surprisingly social.

If local regulations allow people to feed them (please don’t where it’s discouraged), they’ll happily hang around for a photoshoot like they own the beach.

One last fun fact…

Pelicans aren’t picky eaters.

Fish are definitely their favourite, but they’ll also eat crabs, squid and… brace yourself… even large fish organs or animal remains if the opportunity presents itself.

So next time you’re staring at that whole fish on your dinner plate that’s making suspicious eye contact…

Remember this and trade it with a pelican for an amazing shot of its magnificent looks! 📸

The billion-dollar company no one can compete with!

And they don’t even have…
Meetings.
Managers.
PowerPoints.
Quarterly reporting.
Performance reviews.

Or an inbox with 4,287 unread emails.

Instead…

They have millions of species and trillions of organisms, all working independently…

…while somehow creating one of the most perfectly coordinated systems on Earth.

Next-level agile, if you ask me. 😏

But seriously…

Every species has a job.

🌳 Trees harvest solar energy.
🍄 Fungi run the underground logistics network.
🐝 Pollinators keep the business growing.
🦅 Predators maintain quality control.
🦠 Microbes recycle absolutely everything.

And even after an organism dies…

…its final job has only just begun.

In a rainforest, nothing is unemployed.

Nothing is wasted.

Everything belongs.

And somehow…

All those countless organisms, each doing one tiny job, together create something none of them could ever create alone.

Clean air.

Fresh water.

Healthy soils.

A stable climate.

Life.

Maybe that’s the biggest lesson nature has been trying to teach us all along.

The strongest organisations aren’t built by controlling every employee…

They’re built by creating an environment where every employee can do what they’re naturally good at.

No CEO needed.. 😉

𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀! 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗢𝗧!

Oh honey, YES. I’m not joking.
Botany said 𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘵, and here we are.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘴…
A real berry isn’t what you think it is!

To earn that berry badge, a fruit must come from 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗿𝘆 and have 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗵𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲.

So bananas? Total berries.
Grapes? Yup, berries too.
Kiwis? Oh babe… berry much yes.

But strawberries?
𝗔𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁.

Those little imposters…
They 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥 to be berries while throwing side-eye at science.

That juicy red part we all adore?
It’s actually the 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲, which we call a 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘭𝘦.

And those tiny “seeds” on the outside?
𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘀!
Each one’s called an 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘦, with a baby seed tucked inside.

So when you bite into a strawberry, you’re basically eating a bed of baby fruit…
Cradling a bunch of actual berries.

𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱 = 𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆-𝗯𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗻. 🤯

Mother Nature clearly had a wild sense of humor.

Still… I’ll always love my sweet lil’ straw-not-berry.

She may not be 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 a berry, but she’s juicy, sassy, and totally irresistible. 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙄 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙩.

So are you team (not-)berry… or feeling berry betrayed?

Congrats! You’re NOT the main character…

Because all you really are…

…is a tiny expression of nature.

Let’s look a little closer.

🖐🏼 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱?
Looks remarkably like a tree’s root system.

👆🏽 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀?
Mirror the patterns of tree rings. Both are unique. Both tell a story.

🍃 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗳?
Distribute water and nutrients through a branching network… just like your blood vessels.

🧠 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘀?
Branch using many of the same mathematical principles that shape trees, maximizing efficiency with minimal energy.

❤️ 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺?
Looks strikingly similar to river deltas, distributing nutrients through the landscape.

Nature has been perfecting these designs for hundreds of millions of years.

You’re not the sequel.

𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿.

Your body contains around 𝟯𝟳 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀.

Sounds impressive, doesn’t it?

Except…

…there are roughly 𝟯𝟵 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗲𝘀 living on and inside you right now.

So technically…

You’re slightly more ecosystem than human.

Think about that for a second. 😉

Every breath you take?
A gift from plants.

Every heartbeat?
Powered by minerals that were once locked inside mountains.

Every cell in your body?
Built from atoms that have already travelled through rainforests, oceans, dinosaurs, volcanoes and even exploding stars over billions of years.

So…

𝗛𝗼𝘄 “𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻” 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆?

The forest isn’t just around you.
It is the blueprint you were built from. taken in The World by @rainforestrebel

When the gods come out to play… ⚡️

That’s what they told me as a kid whenever a thunderstorm rolled in.

In my imagination Zeus was chasing Thor across the sky, throwing lightning bolts as if they were playing tag.

I have to admit… I still love that visual. 😉

Unfortunately, the real story is a lot less mythical…

After a few hot days, the atmosphere becomes loaded with energy. Every 1°C of warming allows the air to hold about 7% more water. Then cold Atlantic air barges in, forcing all that hot, humid air upwards.

Within minutes, thunderclouds can grow 10–15 km high.

Inside them, ice crystals collide millions of times, separating electrical charges.

Imagine rubbing a balloon on your hair…
…but on absolute monster mode. 👹

One⚡️can carry around 30,000 amps. For comparison? Your wall socket delivers about 16.

Then comes my favourite part…

Lightning heats the surrounding air to almost 30,000°C. About 5x hotter than the Sun’s surface.

The air explodes outward.

That is thunder!

Not sound.
A shock wave.

That’s why your windows shake, your chest vibrates… and your car alarm suddenly joins the conversation.

So why are we (and animals) so scared?

Because your brain hates three things:
💥 Loud.
⚡️ Unpredictable.
🌍 The entire environment changing at once.

Your brainstem is already screaming 𝘋𝘈𝘕𝘎𝘌𝘙! before you’ve consciously processed what’s happening.

And one last (not so) fun fact…

Lightning doesn’t even have to hit a cow to be deadly... 🐄

When it strikes the ground, electricity spreads through the soil. Because cows stand with their legs far apart, the electricity can travel up one leg, through the heart, and down another.

Nature is incredible…
…and sometimes a bit ruthless.

So next time you’re being woken up by your car alarm because of the pressure wave…

Do what I love to do…

Sit in front of a window.
Watch the show.
And count.

Because that old trick of counting to see how far away the storm is, you thought was a myth?

It’s actually true.

Every 3 seconds between the flash and the boom equals roughly 1 kilometre.

So…

Flash.

Looking back at a founding year as a founder… 💚

And somehow, our very first year already belongs in the history books.

One year ago, Restore the Legacy started with a blessing, a team of 6 people, and a shared belief that rainforest restoration could be done differently.

One year later:

✔️ A team of 29 active contributors
🌴 Expanded from Bali to Borneo
👨🏽‍🌾 Working with 200+ farmers and community members
🎓 Partnerships with 3 leading Dutch universities
💚 €171,000 entrusted to our mission in our first 8 active months

Definitely something to be proud of in a founding year.

But honestly? I’m even prouder of everything that didn’t make it into the numbers.

The mistakes.
The lessons.
The cultural surprises.
The team discussions.
The moments I questioned my life choices.

Building an international foundation with ANBI status is many things.

Simple is not one of them. 😅

But still, we’re here.

Still learning.
Still building.
Still showing up for something bigger than ourselves.

To our team, partners, friends, family, supporters, and everyone who kept believing in us while we were still figuring things out:

Thank you. 💚

We’re only just getting started.

Curious about our first-year figures? Check out the governance page on our website.
