I am deeply grateful to receive this year’s General Commission from the Barlow Endowment, and genuinely thrilled to work on a long-awaited large-scale violin concerto with these incredible musicians, Miranda Cuckson and the Talea Ensemble.
I worked with Miranda back in 2021, and the recording she made (in a non-stop take) was truly beyond my logic. I am also eagerly looking forward to working with Talea, some of whom (Steve, Barry, Adrian, Jim, and now Nicolee) I already have great, even greater, or the greatest memories with.
It is also an honor to join this wonderful cohort of composers, including my fellow CCCC alum, Ania!

감사합니다. by @raintreesketch

(Korean translation follows.)

Finally after years of waiting and overcoming some unreal and dire obstacles, I am happy to invite you to this unusual and beautiful sound world of my Timestory, painstakingly performed by 13 phenomenal soloists of the Grossman Ensemble, under the baton of Vimbayi Kaziboni who magically realized this time-fantasia.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who have gone on this timeless journey with me.

Very happy to visit Roosevelt University and share thoughts and music with the wonderful students! Thank you so much for your warm welcome, Kyong Mee, and also for the fabulous dinner, serendipitously joined by Yeeseon! I was very humbled by your sincere encouragement. It was super fun and inspiring, with topics ranging from fractals and paintings to Bollywood music and just tuning! by @raintreesketch

I am very happy to finally share the recording of Mu-ak: Soul Unbinding, beautifully performed by ensemble .thrum at the University of Virginia this past September!

While mixing the live recording all day yesterday, I really came to realize just how much time and dedication Kelly, Jiyeon, and John spent bringing out everything from the smallest details to the deepest sprit of the work, and I really tried to capture all of them in this edit.

Here I am sharing the second movement, which is perhaps the most dynamic and exciting part of the piece, which is inspired by the intense and highly rhythmic moments of a real gut, where the mudang dances and performs in an ecstatic state of spiritual possession (신내림).

Mu-ak: Soul Unbinding draws inspiration from Korean gut (굿), a shamanistic ritual tradition, and more specifically from Jin-o-gui-gut (진오귀굿), a ritual traditionally performed to guide the soul of the deceased toward peace.

The complete work is now available on my YouTube channel, so feel free to listen!

My deepest gratitude again to Kelly, Jiyeon, and John for bringing this piece to life so beautifully.
I hope you enjoy the music. taken in Old Cabell Hall, UVA by @raintreesketch

Had an incredible four-day visit to the University of Virginia.
Kelly Sulick, John Mayhood, and Jiyeon Choi of ensemble .thrum gave a truly wonderful East Coast premiere of my Mu-ak: Soul Unbinding. You can hear a one-minute excerpt below and witness their remarkable artistry.

It was truly wonderful (and this is the best part of being a composer) to hear the piece for the very first time performed by such magical performers, and I am so grateful for their incredible artistry and commitment, carrying the piece across continents from Incheon to Portland and now to Virginia, performing and rehearsing it so many times with such dedication. The acoustics of UVA’s Old Cabell Hall were perfect for the intimate and delicate textures of the piece.

I was also deeply inspired by my meetings with the innovative and ambitious composition students of Ted Coffey and Leah Reid. It was a great pleasure to hear their music, learn about their ideas, and share some of my thoughts with them.

Charlottesville felt very special to me, as the landscape reminded me remarkably of South Korea—surrounded by the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, with surprisingly similar weather.

Truly grateful to ensemble .thrum again for bringing the piece to life, I believe it will keep growing. The full concert recording will be available soon.

켈리 설릭, 최지연, 존 메이후드 님께 다시 한번 진심으로 감사드립니다. taken in Old Cabell Hall, UVA by @raintreesketch

Severe air quality in Chicago today. The ash and dust came from the beautiful forests and fields of Ontario, Canada, which I enjoyed driving through on my way back from Montreal just 10 days ago. This happened last year, and now it is happening again. by @raintreesketch

Ensemble .thrum: Kelly Sulick, John Mayhood, and Jiyeon Choi will premiere my Mu-ak: Soul Unbinding at ClarinetFest 2026 in Incheon this Saturday, July 11.
They encouraged me to explore some Korean aesthetics, and I took this opportunity to finally delve into the Korean musok (무속) tradition, a truly fascinating world where myth, music, dance, and ritual become inseparable within family and community-centered ceremonies.
I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and look forward to hearing the premiere.

The ensemble will perform the work again at the National Flute Association Convention in Portland this August. by @raintreesketch
