A week full of fun in Chicago! I had a great time at the Summer Composition Intensive! Grateful to have joined the faculty alongside @zaemunn and @joshuamarquezmusic , working with such a devoted group of participating composers.
To top it off, two of my pieces were performed at a concert presented by @newmusicchicago brought to life by the incredible performers @silverroseduo , Kate Carter, Jeremy Vigil, and @herinekoschak . So special to have friends in the audience for it too.
Bruce and I also had one unstructured day visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art and hanging out with friends one more time!! 🥂

On Tuesday, April 21st, I had the immense pleasure of conducting a lecture recital in which I discussed the musical structure of the duma - a Ukrainian heroic epic that originated in the 15th century. It was orally performed by a kobzar, a blind singer who accompanied himself on the bandura or the kobza. I perform two traditional Ukrainian dumy based on transcriptions that I had found during by research and also wrote a duma of my own based on the poem “The Dawn Burned With the Blast of Missiles” (Горів Світанок Вибухом Ракети) by Alla Vasylyshyn. I was accompanied by Khrystyna Musiy, a bandura performer and vocalist in the Chicagoland area. I would like to thank Ms. Musiy for helping me prepare for this performance. I would also like to thank my advisor Dr. Dongryul Lee (@raintreesketch ) and my voice teacher Ms. Michelle Areyzaga (@michelle_areyzaga ) for helping me prepare for my lecture recital. I would also like to thank Lyudmyla Krasnyuk (@krasnyuksakalosh ) and Victor Mishalow (@victormishalow ) for providing me with initial research materials on this topic. I would also like to thank my family for supporting me in my musical journey. I believe that it is important to preserve Ukrainian music and the history of its evolution through various genres, especially with the duma and performances on the bandura. You can listen to the full lecture and performance at the link in my bio!
