5 years ago, we accepted the challenge to proactively uplift pinays and their stories. Since then, 4 generations of wom*n shared the most vulnerable aspects of their identities on a New York City stage and this past June, to the world and in honor of wom*n in the Philippines through @rootsofhealth. Until the patriarchy persists, so shall we. Raised Pinays raise pinays.

Bringing it back to Generation 1 of Raised Pinay in 2016 at the @phinnewyork in NYC. Re-membering seeds and roots of Raised Pinay today. It is so easy in the world that is deeply colonized, but we are raised to find value and understanding of our lives through the lens, structures, and conditioning of colonization. Raised Pinay, is not just about the show day, It is about the decision that the women who are involved in the show make to invest in themselves through a process of Sisterhood and Decolonization. And the moment that that decision is made, they forever will be changed. This is not just in reflection Raised Pinay, This is the time that we live in, and being able to have a space, where we can find camaraderie, solidarity and love to hold us in our healing, it is a privilege and a gift, and comes from deep responsibility.
We open our circle to you all this weekend. A third generation of Womxn re-membering themselves and all the Womxn they rise with and for- by honoring their stories.

"Subverting Subservience with Butterfly Sleeves"
written and photographed by my now lawfully-wedded partner, Haseeb Charania Fonte (yes, he's taking my last name)
🇵🇭
The Spanish regarded pre-colonization Filipino women as immodest and loud. This perception came from the disparity in how Filipinos and Spanish perceived the role of women. Pre-colonial Filipina women (Babaylan) held parity with men through their status as warrior and government leaders who were highly respected for their education and loud, assertive opinions.
✨️
Perturbed by women's high status in the Philippines, the Spanish aimed to rebrand the ideal woman as quiet, modest, gentle, submissive, and subservient. One of these re-branding efforts included labeling the more assertive women (Babaylan) as witches while others included taking away women's rights to hold office and receive an education. Efforts also included revisions to make the attire worn by women more modest. Two places of attire were introduced to uphold modest values: the Panuela shawl chest cover and large Pagoda sleeves, which covered most of the arms.
🦋
As a form of rebellion against the Spanish conservatism, Filipinas in the early 1900s began to cinch the Pagoda and Panuela garment, which both showcased more forearm and created the more powerful butterfly sleeve affect that adorned the shoulders. Over the years, these butterfly sleeves would become more prominent with the use of hardened lining and serve as a nod to the resurgence of the power Filipinas once held. Through these butterfly sleeves, women had greater adjacency to power and more permission to exude that power wherever they went.

Get ready for the holidays with this script in your back pocket: How to set boundaries with your (grand)parents who misgender you

Lola and Lolo, you don't have to understand me to respect me. What I ask that you try to understand is that "siya" in your language is "they" in English and it makes me feel cared for as your grandchild when you refer to me in that way. I know it's different but like my Tagalog, it will get less difficult with practice.

✏️

If your family is chronically misgendering you even after you’ve corrected them, it may feel like a boundary violation. It isn’t always possible to enforce perfect boundaries with them, but pay attention to how it makes you feel and make actions based on the needs your feelings are telling you about.

❤️

This is a collaboration with Asian-American s3x educator @imjustineaf. For more boundary templates like this, follow her ghostwriting page @_good.byes_. Founded in 2021, Asians For Sex Positivity is a digital organization dedicated to dismantling sexual shame, deconstructing fetishization, and amplifying Asian voices. I know this offering is being shared a bit late, but I know whoever feels called will arrive.

Kapwa Tarot and Magic as Resistance: Channeling Ancestral Spirits of Justice and Liberation to Radically Imagine a Way Forward

This is a MINKA @minkabrooklyn x Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health Partnership Offering—Created to Bring Efforts of Equity, Diversity, and Decolonizing Work to All.
This class is open to any womxn (woman, femme, trans, non-binary, non-gender-conforming and other, desires to gather within this context) who wishes to create a deeper connection and healing of our ancestral lineage.

Participant identifies as: East Asian, Southeast Asian
South Asian, Middle Eastern l, Pacific Islander

In this class, participants are invited to join Aki @soulflowermedicine and guest facilitators to explore the ancestral realm for our individual and collective healing. Being ‘Asian’ is not a monolith experience; we gather in this complexity to be fully seen, heard and transform our wounds into our gifts.

In this gathering space, JL will lead those who arrive in a re-membering of the call for spiritual guidance in the wake of liberation movements throughout the history of Colonization and our ancestors’ global resistance to it. We will strengthen our understanding of our duties as descendants of those who survived, and move to make communal declarations of our commitment to the creation of a new world order.

In this work our collective will call for visions and messages to guide us in our individual and collective responsibilities to this time of Decolonization that we are ushering forward. We will use the diasporic divination tool Kapwa Tarot rooted in Pilipin@/x symbology and cultural relation and be held in ancestral re-membrance channeling work by JL utilizing her familial and learned spiritual practices and rituals.

Join us in this important work for our collective liberation. by @raisedpinay

Grateful for @black6coffee and the mission behind this company to fund the larger humanitarian efforts of @black6project. Join our raffle for 4 bags of coffee!

The Black 6 Coffee Trading Co. is a veteran-owned company created to fund the Black 6 Project, a non-profit organization that pools its resources of motivated individuals to bring care to those in need worldwide. Using our network of veterans, first responders, and medical professionals, we sent medical teams recently to remote areas in Mindoro, Philippines, performing medical assessments of several tribal communities.

Our passion for coffee is only surpassed by our desire to use our medical skills to help those in need. By sharing our love for coffee with you, we invite you to take the journey with us to the remote villages, the river crossings, and the uncertain trails where people do not have access to good healthcare. That is our mission at the Black 6 Coffee Trading Co., to allow the coffee lover in you the ability to enable the humanitarian in all of us.
