Message from JL Umipig- @jlcreator our creative cultivator/facilitator/director for Raised Pinay Generations 1-5 and Lessons from our Mothers: Give Love to the Mommas of @raisedpinay Generation 5 and witness the sharing of their stories while also supporting our efforts for @rootsofhealth

We have been gathering together since last winter to nurture the most sincere and lovingly raw stories of their lives. It has been such an intimate center of release in each others lives when we gather and I pray you all arrive with the understanding that this is not a show, it is a sharing into the windows of the lives of these creators of life. Arrive with intention to hold them, to see them in wholeness and yourself in them as they mirror their human experiences to their communities and families.

Tickets are limited so get them soon. And join us in celebrating all Mothers and Birthers/Givers of life.

This is my first artistic offering in person since the pandemic. I’ve been tender about sharing, and also just moving through so many tender things in grief and heartache while holding this space for our mommas. They have witnessed me alongside each other in the GriefJoy of motherhood as they also instilled their trust in me to shape this container for them to be held and seen and felt.

Raised Pinay @raisedpinay has been a healing circle for so many Pinays in the past 7 years and I have continually felt honored to create in such a sacred way.
I am so proud to welcome community to this 5th generation of our circles centered on the honoring of these Mamas and all the Mothers we are calling in to be held, heard and honored with them in this space.

I finally feel the room to create intention for invitation, and I know it’s less than a week away, but I’m letting community know, if you can arrive to this sharing I would be so grateful and happy to see you all there.

together to share their stories that echo the lived

Raised Pinay is a devised theatre Piece, where Pinays
(Filipinas/diasporic Filipinas) participate in an embodied
storytelling process, resulting in an original collective
expressive offering, interweaving Pinays' stories,
expressed through monologues, dialogues, poetry, visual
art, songs, and movement. This process is guided and held
by Artist, Cultural Organizer and Healer- Jana Lynne

Roots Of Health (Ugat ng Kalusugan)
a nonprofit organization focused on improving the
reproductive, maternal and sexual health of women, girls,
and their communities in Puerto Princesa, Palawan in the
Philippines.
Raised Pinay: The Fifth Generation is an invitation
specifically to cis/trans/nongender binary Pinay identifying
mothers. Together we focus on remembering, exploring,
and surfacing stories of the lived experiences and the
legacies of mothering through community healing work/
practice/ritual/ceremony in relationship to mothers.
Themes include what it means to decolonize parenting; to
honor dead and living legacies; and to pay homage to the
transformations mothers face throughout their lives as
they "become," forever change, and evolve in the path

Opening night (tonight) is officially sold out, but you can still purchase tix to tomorrow’s performances of @raisedpinay Gen 5: Raising Up the Mother, benefiting women’s health organization @rootsofhealth in the Philippines. As background, Raised Pinay is devised theatre, where diasporic Filipinas #Pinays participate for free in a month-long writing workshop, resulting in an original piece interweaving their stories, expressed through monologues, dialogues, poetry, visual art, songs, and/or movement. I was a writer and performer in the third generation of RP and it’s what put me on a path of telling the stories of our Fil Am community.

I’m honored to be among the producers of this year’s production, specifically featuring stories of the lived experiences and the legacies of mothering, written and performed by cis/trans/nongender binary Pin*y-identifying mothers. Themes include what it means to decolonize parenting; to honor dead and living legacies; and to pay homage to the transformations mothers face throughout their lives as they “become,” forever change, and evolve in the path of raising future generations. One of my greatest joys of focusing our 5th Generation @raisedpinay on gathering Mothers, is bringing our children together in communal play weekly. It is such a gift to have our children growing in friendships as we grow in our sisterhood. The visions I have had of what creating again as a mother has always been in deep conversation to building culture of artist spaces and community gatherings that will be intentional for parents, so we can arrive powerfully wherever we feel called and so our children can be cared for and tended for by others who believe in the power of having the presence of families wherever community gathers.

I am so thankful to our production team @maxxeva @marias.weekinreview @kjpangantihon @hyffeinated for supporting this vision and for taking on Tita duties of care- and an extra shoutout to my mentee @jaylintheunicorn for holding it down with the extra hands (and a future gratitude to my other mentee @raisaxlgl who is Kalilaya’s regular baby sitter who’s helping us our week of show!) It takes a village truly fam!

I continue to imagine how every circle I am supporting to build intends to honor the presence of parents and children. I’m so grateful for this manifestation, of care.

I’m waking up lifted by the energy of returning to the opening of my most centered creative self, one who creates community as a space of intergenerational, intersectional, inter-spiritual healing. After our last ceremony I fell into E’s arms and released in tears-the joy and pride of having community convened so powerfully again, where vision in continuity and generative expansion in healing medicine of togetherness, connectedness was manifested.

The Mothers and Organizers of @raisedpinay Generation 5 and my Comrades and Family at @elpuentepresente became my circles I landed in and tethered me to life in grounding as I held Daury in his transitions, they kept me seen, felt and connected as Mothers and Nurturers of our children and collective children. I relished in sitting together with our children in play around us, being held in communal space with generational community lineage from both Raised Pinay and El Puente holding all of us.

And these mothers laid trust over my body and spirit amidst my grief tending to tend in extension and expansion to their own. We held one another in the interweavings of Motherhood, praying over each other, pouring care into our wounds, amplifying laughter and wails of release in rage/ grief into the sky, honored/held reverence for each other’s divinity as creators and we fell in Love with each other.

To return to community in fullness beside these mothers, @vangloriousness @architate @sockielayasmith @therealg6317 @amanda.lacson @momminaround @layac @lorely.trinidad, our Raised Pinay sacred conveners @maxxeva @marias.weekinreview @kjpangantihon @hyffeinated , Legacy holders @imjustineaf @rockyrach16 , uplifted by my spiritual family and the intergenerational power of @elpuentepresente @danse.mom alongside my mentees @jaylintheunicorn @melvinthemartian @raisaxlgl @joel_cruise , on stage with Daury holding us alongside all our ancestors and spiritual guides we called in, with community and family bearing witness was everything I needed to bring me back to life in the fullness of my transformation.

I am here. I am a creator. I am the Mother of Kalilaya Amorosa Umipig-Candelario. And I do not and will never arrive alone.

As a @raisedpinay Generation 3 writing workshop participant and performer, I am excited and honored to be co-producing Generation 5 with my sisters @blondemary and @kjpangantihon . #RaisedPinay was a transformational experience during a difficult time in my life and what led me on the path of writing my stories and stories about my #FilAm community in #NYC.

Generation 5 will be a space that specifically honors the Pin*y mother in her/their complexities of what it means to have been Raised Pinay and now be given the rite of raising children of Pilipin@/x lineage and legacy. Join us and share the call with your sisters!

What is Raised Pinay? It is a theater production and fundraiser for @rootsofhealth - but oh, it is so much more! As a member of the original generation, I can speak to the therapeutic, loving, and supportive sisterhood that forms when Pinays share their time and energy. From generative writing workshops, we mine our experiences to create pieces that our director, the brilliant @jlcreator , weaves into a singular cohesive script. We cultivate a circle of trust and kapwa as we rehearse. Then we take a deep breath and perform. This isn't "acting", y'all. It's a powerful spotlight on her-story and an opportunity for healing.

Mondays! We are starting this process again, and this time we invite the Intergenerational conversations between Mothers who were Raised Pinays, raising Pilipin@/x children in NY/NJ.

In the coming of our 5th Generation of Pinay Wom*n sharing their stories of being raised up, we invite Mothers to arrive to share the complexities of what it means to have been Raised Pinay and now be given the rite of raising children of Pilipin@/x lineage and legacy. This space is one that honors the Pinay mother in her/their complexities of raising our children aligned with traditions passed down, while also challenging tradition that was instilled in us through colonization with intention to guide our relationship to our descendents with pathways of healing, justice and liberation. We will be in relationship to what it means to decolonize parenting, to honor our dead and living legacies and to pay homage to the transformations we face throughout our lives as we become, and forever change and evolve in the path of raising future generations.

“Raising Up” Writing Workshops
The beginning of our process is where we surface our stories, in community. Each session will focus on re-membering and exploration of the lived experiences and the legacies of Mothering that we experience in relation.

The sessions include embodiment, somatic, arts therapy, breathwork and core compression practices and community healing work/practice/ritual/ceremony in relationship to Mothers.

Oh hey there! Allow me to introduce myself in a way that's fresh to even my Day 1s:

I was wearing this shirt when I was at a bakery earlier that day when this photo was taken. I noticed this person who kept staring at it until they approached me saying, "Excuse me, I'm Filipino and those look like Filipino names. Are they famous people I should know about?"

"They're my grandparents," I said proudly.

Maybe not famous but these ancestors were the first influencers in my life. Because of them, I was raised proudly pinay and devoutly Catholic--two identities that felt synonymous during my childhood and now play integral roles in my career in sexuality education. 9 years of Catholic schooling is both how I got into social justice work (Jesus doing inspirational shit) and why I stay committed to fighting for it (smash patriarchy, end reproductive injustice, and prevent child sexual abuse). This dissonance keeps me challenged, grounded, and always ready.

Into my adulthood, I've understood that my being pinay was only synonymous with Catholicism because of colonization and that's when shit got real for me. These identities greatly inform how I navigate this world and yet, are only 2 parts of my multifaceted self. So, welcome to my personal page that is a sampler platter of my abundant life.
