Documenting the raising of our daughter Resilie (re-sə-lē) from 0-5yo.

POSTS STORIES REELS

On our weekly LIVE Q&A this past week, we discussed our process toward reading independently...

Here it is, simplified:

1. You read to the child

2. You read with the child (they become responsive, point, make sounds or say words, etc)

3. The child reads with you (they want to read and you participate following their lead. Example in my latest video before this)

4. The child reads independently Lv. 1 (first recalling the words from memory)

5. The child reads independently Lv. 2 (they can decode new words entirely on their own with comprehension)

Note: all five steps continue to happen simultaneously, interchangebly.

At 3 days old, Resilie could lift her head and turn it from one side to the other. Here's what we did...

Raise children who can think. 🙏

Raising Resilie to EXPERIENCE things, not just know about things.

They will learn more from doing. 🙏

Key Points:

- Have different resources avalaible
- Let the child self explore
- Don't stop them or try to make them sit still

This is what multimodal learning has produced.

There are times when we have used the charts, used the model, used our own bodies, or used the cards to draw parallel connections to what we define as the shoulder.

Now you see in real time, her showing us all of these connections.

Keep it fun. Keep it short. Use different tools and resources...

Give them space to figure things out and draw their own connections.

HOW TO HELP A BABY READ INDEPENDENTLY:

1. Read with them consistently everyday. Have a set time like naptime and bedtime.
2. Read only when you and child are happy and enjoying it. Creates a positive emotional connection to reading.
3. Read "theatrically." Do voices, characters, actions, sounds, point to the words and pictures. Make it an interactive experience.
4. Let the child see you reading independently.
5. Start as early as possible!

Hope this helps! Happy reading everyone!

Want to help your baby/toddler improve their speech?

No drilling. No rote memorization.

Any parent can do these three things:

1. Read daily

Reading can expose your child to up to 3X lexical density, and up to 12X lexical diversity. More when reading nonfiction, technical, and scientific literature.

2. Narrate

No baby talk! Number of distinct words is a far stronger predictor of vocabulary and syntax than total volume of words. Use vocabulary rich, grammatically correct, complete sentences. Studies show it can be 2.5-4X greater density and diversity than standard baby talk. Narrate the day so your baby can hear more unique words.

3. Converse

Let your baby have a turn at talking. Ask a question and pause. Before words form, they may coo and make sounds. Give them space to try and show them you are listening.

SAVE and SHARE with someone who needs this. 🙏
