fall 2020 • arch402a: odd lots • 3d miniature map collage

i love this one
the 3d miniature is based on the map collage and takes inspiration from qualities of water in its 3 states of matter. the 3d qualities of water that are consistent across different scales and states of matter allow for this miniature to have very fine pixelated moments that blend, intersect, and cut larger more extreme moments. the form is characterized by a hierarchy of different procedures for creating surfaces.

fall 2020 • arch402a: odd lots • miniature map collage

exploring the representation of bodies of water in 2d to generate a map collage that delves into the 3d qualities of water that are consistent across different scales and states of matter.
3d coming soon :)

fall 2020 • arch402a: odd lots • 3d map parcel

this exercise transforms a 2d map parcel to a 3d form, using a series of line to 3d transformations. the produced 3d map parcel yields conditions of height and overlap ambiguity, as well as pictorial water-like qualities and the hierarchical intersections of organic and geometric shapes and forms.
swipe to see the original map parcel, from a map of switzerland 🇨🇭

spring 2020 • arch302b • leimert park community center video

so excited to finally share this!!! this video (using the twinmotion software) was the replacement/solution for sharing a 3d model digitally when our semester shifted to the online format. while this change came with plenty of struggles (thanks @cstratton.arch for exporting my video on her younger brother’s gaming computer 😩😍), i am so, so pleased and excited about the end result!! something cool about making this video (instead of a model) is that it made it easier for me to express my ideas to my non-architecture friends and family, which was really fun during quarantine :).

the project employs a long-span system based on creating a 3-dimensional vector truss system that works both vertically and laterally. the structure works by offsetting the lower chords of each truss by five feet laterally. the shapes of the upper and lower chords are derived from conglomerations of hexagons in section, yielding a condition where wall becomes ceiling becomes floor. furthermore, the truss system geometry yields views both through and between different spaces, both interior and exterior. in response to lowering two basketball courts half a level, the site is manipulated to both direct light into those semi-underground spaces, and afford views for the public to watch the games. two more courts are raised to the second level, so they can be viewed more publicly, encouraging the neighborhood to engage with the site.

spring 2020 • arch302b • leimert park community center floorplans

roof plan, 2nd floor plan, ground floor plan, and basement plan. the community center’s program includes 4 full size basketball courts (two are dropped 1/2 level, and two are raised and open-air), a cafe, two exhibition spaces, two classrooms, a gym, offices, and multi-purpose flexible spaces. the project is based on a long-span truss system that works both vertically and laterally to form 3-dimensional vector trusses.

really interesting to re-imagine inhabiting these shared spaces now, as we are 6 months deep in the pandemic. i guess the open-air basketball courts might be good for social distancing protocols 😂.

spring 2020 • arch302b • leimert park community center serial sections

which is your favorite?? mine are B-B, D-D, and G-G

serial sections show the variation in spacial qualities and visibility through and between different programs of this design for a community center in leimert park. the project is based on a long-span truss system that works both vertically and laterally to form 3-dimensional vector trusses.

p.s. can you spot the @jeffkoons scale figures in the gallery spaces? 🎈

spring 2020 • arch302b • leimert park community center diagrams SWIPE for full drawing :)

exploded structural system from concrete foundation → primary steel structure (upper front and lower back chords; 8” steel members) → secondary steel structure (chords connecting upper and lower chords of each 3d truss; 6” steel members) → tertiary steel structure (chords connecting each 3d truss; 3” steel members) → concrete circulation towers

crazy drawing for a crazy structure

leimert park is a cultural hub neighborhood in south los angeles, renowned for its historical and contemporary african-american art, culture, and music (especially jazz!!). the community was developed in the 1920s with spanish colonial revival homes, and recognized for its model of urban planning. for easy access to cultural landmarks such as leimert park village, the vision theater, and the many blues and jazz clubs, hop off the crenshaw/LAX metro line at the leimert park station (crenshaw blvd and vernon ave)!
