Time spent birding in the Northern Ranges of Trinidad is never wasted.

I’ve spent years chasing toucans all over Trinidad, mostly seeing them high in trees or way off in the distance but today I was speechless with delight.

I was driving down the Arima-Blanchisseuse Road, spotted a wild tobacco tree full of ripe berries, pulled over to see what might be feeding on them. A bananaquit.

2 seconds later I couldn’t believe my eyes - a toucan! I spent quite a few minutes ‘shooting’ this beautiful bird, trying to catch that moment when she tossed the plucked berry into the air to catch and eat it.

I caught a few priceless shots!

Enjoy this one. Imagine me uttering a string of (quite unrepeatable) exclamations as I watched this immaculate wild bird just a few feet from me enjoying her afternoon tea!

When she’d had enough she just left silently, disappearing into the forest.

Early morning in Caroni Bird Sanctuary.

The cool, still dawn explodes into a riot of colour as the sun rises, the birds wake up, disperse into the swamp and enjoy the beautiful sunny day.

It’s well worth the very early start!

At long last I made a visit to the Feathered Friends macaw and parrot rehabilitation sanctuary in Port of Spain.

A wonderful experience if you enjoy getting close to birds and seeing them flying freely.

Such great work being done by the owners.

It never gets old being able to observe macaws in our urban spaces.

These two blue and golds were feeding quite happily until they decided to have a spat!

And to those of you who spotted me hanging around a lamppost trying to look inconspicuous- this is what I was doing!

I was searching for images of leucistic hummingbirds in my phone photo library. The search for ‘white hummingbird’ returned MANY hummers, none of which were leucistic that I could see, so I searched for ‘white bird’.

Couldn’t resist sharing these few beauties that I made photos of last year. And finally, the leucistic hummer I was lucky enough to see in Tobago a couple of years ago ☺️🤍

I’ve been getting lots of visits from a small flock of white-eyed parakeets recently - they love to crunch the seeds of the yellow Pride of Barbados. I planted the tree some years ago expressly to encourage parrots into the garden and it has worked wonders - orange winged amazons, yellow crowned amazons, festive parrots, white-eyed parakeets, green rumped parrotlets have all visited, enjoyed the seeds and entertained me! Not to mention all the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds and other nectar feeders that have graced the flowers!

When in England….

… climate change is real… insanely hot this last week, even hotter than Trinidad.

It hasn’t stopped me enjoying being back in my home land and I even got chance to chase a few butterflies!

Had a great overnight at @guildfordmanor - a perfect spot within easy reach of Gatwick to relax and rejuvenate after an overnight flight. With shopping opportunities in nearby Guildford!

Beautiful gardens, comfortable rooms, gym, spa and very indulgent afternoon tea! In the hot weather, the outdoor spa pool surrounded by Mediterranean gardens and relaxation spot surrounded by lavender were just right.

And did I mention that the AC works really well??
