The sea. Time. (Sea) Sámi half-hours, woven into a tapestry of memories, stories, and shared knowledge. What we carry with us.

A meeting between my rátnu, Lásságámmi and the sea and wind in Ivguvuotna.

Takk til Jens Kristian Nilsen for bildet ✨☕️🌊 @jenskristianphotographer @lassagammi taken in Ivgobahta, Troms, Norway by @ramonasal0

Some beautiful memories of natural/ plant dyeing of wool. These pictures are from my film camera during the activity days by Birtavarre Husflid at Holmenes Sjøsamiske gård. Tomorrow it's Spinnvill Rokkefestival in Birtavarre/Kåfjorddalen, and it is open and free from 10:00-16:00, where you can buy crafts, coffee, maybe cake(???), for sure waffles, and watch or take part in the spinning championship! I really wish I could attend this year, but I have the flu and I feel like a foggy cloud drifting around. I hope and know that the event will be very fun ☕️✨🧶 taken in Birtavarre by @ramonasal0

For two weeks, I have been so fortunate to stay at the researcher residence Lásságámmi, Áillohaš’s home on the coastal rocks in Ivgobatha. The purpose of my stay was to work on my PhD, both practically and in writing. The stay has been rewarding, nourishing, and inspiring. I wanted to share a few photos as a travelogue from my phone, but I have also collaborated with photographer Jens Kristian Nilsen, so more documentation will follow.

During my time at Lásságámmi, I have written to the sound of waves, reflected, read books from the library, braided, drawn, worked on garments, and also had the opportunity to live in the bedroom with the curtains and bedding I made for Lásságámmi together with Kjellaug Isaksen a few years ago.

In addition, I have had wonderful days with friends and family. Kjellaug taught me how to weave bands on the rigid heddle loom, so I have been weaving with home-spun and plant-dyed yarn, inspired by the rátnu. I have also had a lot of visits, walked along the shore and hiked on Saana mountain in Kilpisjärvi, spent a lot of time in the sauna, swam in the fjord, listened to music, and been surrounded by beautiful art and a truly unique atmosphere.

On one of the last days, our beloved King Harald passed away. He will be remembered as a caring, charismatic, and humble King who used his position to do good, to include, and to bring people together. He was a compass that showed us which values were worth elevating. Regardless of one’s stance on the monarchy, as a Sámi, I can say that having Harald as our King has meant a great deal. Rest in peace, King Harald.

I would also like to express my gratitude for all the conversations and insightful reflections on my PhD process during these months of residency in both Kysten and Lásságámmi. Discussing my work with others has given me a new footing and the inspiration needed to navigate forward. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity and the privilege of staying at Lásságámmi. Ollu giitu 🌊 taken in Ivgobahta, Troms, Norway by @ramonasal0

In July and August, I stayed at the artist residency at Gjesteatelieret at Troms fylkeskultursenter in Tromsø. These residencies are incredibly valuable, as they allow artists living outside of Tromsø to get the opportunity to explore the facilities while getting to know the local art community.

While my practice primarily is rooted in textiles, printmaking has always been interesting to me - both collecting and trying to practice it myself. Being at Kysten has been exciting because it allowed me to use the printing press, learning by doing. I am much more comfortable with threads than paper and ink, so it is a good learning process.

My fascination with lino, woodcut and lithography began during my art history studies at UiO, particularly through a course called «Art on Paper». We even visited the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) to try lithography and lino printing for a day. That was my very first visit to KHiO, and little did I know that I would be back many times after that.

Later on, during a residency at Artica Svalbard, this interest deepened. It led to an artistic collaboration with Katarina Skår Lisa and Tom Warner, resulting in an exhibition at Nordover in Svalbard and the North Norwegian Art Museum (NNKM) in Tromsø. Our starting point back then was lino printing on textile and visual diaries. Following that residency, I attended a lithography course with Sámi artist Hans-Ragnar Mathisen.
I hope I can continue to explore this further in my practice, in connection to textile design.

Thank you to Troms fylkeskommune for the wonderful stay at Tromskysten residency, and thank you to Jens-Kristian for the photos! I am already at my next residency to work on my PhD and writing, and I have realized that I live a rather nomadic life. I am looking forward to a new year at KhiO and all the upcoming milestones in my PhD project. taken in Troms Fylkeskultursenter Kysten by @ramonasal0
