Professor Ramon Weber, now in his second year teaching and researching in the Department of Architecture, focuses on generative, computational and structural design. Creating new methods that aim to optimize building performance and sustainability for both inhabitants and the environment. His installation Housing Stock, showcased at the 2025 Venice Biennale, presents a physical snapshot of a digital algorithm that iteratively tests floor plan configurations - revealing how architectural space can be the most crucial factor for building performance.

Super excited to share some more images of my installation at the #arsenale!! My contribution to this year's biennale architettura in the main exhibition @labiennale, curated by @crassociati. The work has been possible by the support of the University of California, Berkeley, and Cass Calder Smith architects.

Huge thanks to the Berkeley students helping me build the project, Yuhan Zhang, Frederic Lam, Zhuoer Chen, Leah Altman, Linc Ruiz-Truong, Mia Wilson, Emma Nakoaka, Sihyeok Yang and Noel Fäh for his support during the installation! #BiennaleArchitettura2025 #IntelliGens #ucberkeley #architecture #biennale #computationaldesign #graph #simulation #digitaldesign #floorplan #algorithm by @ramoneliasweber

Excited to share my contribution to the the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Carlo Ratti! @labiennale @crassociati

The work is a physical snapshot of the digital algorithms I have been developing on automating, representing and generating building floor plans. The installation presents a database of building floorplans where four floating building volumes pick and choose different floor plans that create changing internal configurations and have implications in building performance and carbon emissions.

The work has been possible by the generous support of the University of California, Berkeley, @ced_berkeley @ucberkeleyarch @ucberkeleyofficial, and Cass Calder Smith architects. @casscaldersmith_ai

Huge thanks to the Berkeley students helping me build the project, Yuhan Zhang @yvonne.z.hang , Frederic Lam @kahong.lam , Zhuoer Chen, Leah Altman @leah.altman , Linc Ruiz-Truong @lincolnrt , Mia Wilson @miafwilson, Emma Nakoaka, Sihyeok Yang and Noel Fäh @noelfaeh for his support during the installation!

I will share more pictures soon and see you at Arsenale! #BiennaleArchitettura2025 #IntelliGens taken in Arsenale di Venezia by @ramoneliasweber

Part 1 of my dissertation: Can we use generative design to estimate embodied carbon more accurately? Published at the IASS conference in 2021 the chapter proposes to use generative geometry with finite element analysis to accurately estimate material quantities of steel structures. We can use the tools from civil engineering to dimension structures for accurate embodied carbon assessment in early stage #design! Learn more at... Generative Structural Design for Embodied Carbon Estimation

solar gain control + structural efficiency = solar exoskeletons

How could a sustainable skyscraper look like? Overcoming solar heat gains of fully glazed facades with shading systems that double as the building's structure.... and yes, we can quantify the benefits in kgCO2. both for operational and #embodiedcarbon #emissions for #netzerobuildings

solar gain control + structural efficiency = solar exoskeleton

Happy to share that together with Prof. Christoph Reinhart and @digitalstructuresmit I just published a new paper in the Journal Solar Energy.

We show how to create an integrated building system that combined generative architectural geometry with building energy and structural simulations. We automate annual radiation simulations with Radiance to quantify the impact of a complex shading system that serves as the buildings structure.
