Professor Ramon Weber, now in his second year teaching and researching in the Department of Architecture, focuses on generative, computational and structural design. Creating new methods that aim to optimize building performance and sustainability for both inhabitants and the environment. His installation Housing Stock, showcased at the 2025 Venice Biennale, presents a physical snapshot of a digital algorithm that iteratively tests floor plan configurations - revealing how architectural space can be the most crucial factor for building performance.

A few shots from a recent field trip to Autodesk!

Assistant Professor of Architecture Ramon Weber took his class, ARCH 259/159: Artificial Intelligence and Generative Design Methods for Sustainable Buildings, to visit Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco. Students got a chance to hear from Chief Sustainability Officer Joe Speicher and Circular Economy Researcher Fope Bademosi, moderated by Angela Foss. Students came away extremely excited and very much inspired by both the conversation and the exhibition.

The Department of Architecture is pleased to announce Ramon Elias Weber’s appointment as an assistant professor specializing in building technologies. Weber works at the intersection of architectural design, building science research, and digital technology. He earned his PhD in Building Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he conducted research with the Digital Structures Group and the Sustainable Design Lab. In his work, he is investigating how computational design methods and simulation tools can create more sustainable architecture.

Weber’s work has been published and presented internationally in both scientific and design venues such as SFMOMA, the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial, and Ars Electronica, as well as in the journals Solar Energy, Building and Environment, 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing, and ACADIA. Weber holds an MS in Media Arts and Science from the MIT Media Lab, where he was part of the Mediated Matter Group. He received his master’s degree in integrative technologies and architectural design research with distinction from the University of Stuttgart and a bachelor’s in architecture from ETH Zurich. He conducted research at the Block Research Group, the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) and worked as an architect at Zaha Hadid Architects in London.

This fall, Weber will be teaching the undergraduate structures course ARCH 150.

🌍 Deep Dive into Swiss Impact in Boston: Consul General Jäger Explores Innovation Ecosystem with Swissnex 🇨🇭

Embarking on a mission to uncover the significant #SwissImpact in Boston, Consul General, Ambassador Niculin Jäger recently undertook a journey hosted by @benjamin.bollmann of @swissnexboston and New York. The primary goal was to gain nuanced insights into Swiss contributions in #science, #research, and #innovation and to connect with the key figures driving these efforts.

The journey started with an immersive tour of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (@mit), where Ambassador Jäger, accompanied by @ramoneliasweber, a Swiss researcher specializing in Building Technology, explored the @mitmedialab and delved into the realm of sustainable, data-driven, and human-centric architecture & construction for the future. Noteworthy encounters included insightful discussions with Markus ElKatsha, a scholar from the City Science research group, specializing in data-driven urban analysis tools, and Caitlin Mueller (@digitalstructures) from the @digitalstructuresmit research group, at the intersection of architecture and structural engineering.

The day culminated in a delightful “Zvieri” reception at the Swissnex offices. The gathering served as a platform to bring together brilliant minds from the extended Swiss community of Boston.

Stay tuned to learn more about Swiss Impact’s exploration in the Boston area, unraveling the intricate threads of collaboration and innovation.

Work from the IAP Building Technology Workshop 𝘈𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 : 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯. Workshop instructed by Caitlin Mueller @digitalstructures, Ramon Weber @ramoneliasweber, and Paul Clemens Bart @bartbratke.

In a one-week workshop students collaboratively developed prototypical timber building systems. The project work was accompanied by lectures and masterclasses from the instructors and invited experts in the fields of generative design, timber construction, and circular economy.

Focusing on timber, one of the most promising building materials to reduce carbon emissions in the built environment, the workshop participants analyzed traditional methods of construction from a tectonic, aesthetic, and sustainability viewpoint to inspire new generative digital design workflows. The workshop introduced methods for digital reassembly and the creation of novel building systems and aggregation logics that build upon traditional construction methods. Based on initial research in the workshop related to reconfigurable material solutions and scalable wood construction, students created a design platform for adaptive space-making.
