If you have been following me at all you probably know that for the last 8 years i've been working on this project called MORSE CODE. It began in 2o17 when I wrote a short scene about a dad trying to connect to his tween-age daughter over ice cream. I wrote a little intro and outro, thinking that if it was successful then maybe I'd do it again and continue the story. I cast the other characters, found a location (thank you @golly.gs in Pleasantview TN) and hired the DP and crew with money from my super lucrative folk singing career.

I edited the thing - video and audio -and my friends @pantslauer and @kriskrisdonegan made the score. We premiered it at the @basementnash and we all watched it together. Probably 30 people worked on that little film, and after 20+ years of touring under my own name the feeling of collaborating with many other people to realize a collective vision was, honestly, life-changing. I was getting a little sick of myself and making that movie felt like the antidote.

I made 3 more short webisodes with some really talented people including Kenneth from the @themilkcartonkids and @deanshortland and @theoliviaevans and then I quit because my little sister suddenly died and I realized that this thing I was obsessed with didn't really matter that much. I moved back west for awhile and quit the music business. Quit everything and worked on a ranch.

Eventually I came back to Nashville because, well all my stuff is here, and somehow the momentum got going again. A talented filmmaker named @mollmaud introduced me to some people who eventually connected me with @travishistory. I'll never forget the day we met. It was at @thebrownsdiner over on Blair, we talked for 3 minutes and I had this very strange feeling that we were absolutely going to work together.

THINGS I HATE: QR codes, paid parking lots, a 10 dollar ticket fee on a 20 dollar ticket, industry wankers, and Spotify… If you hate these things too, but you love music, im opening my studio Ranch Vovo in East Nashville to host shows for a select list of artists, starting with @leralynn Sunday Oct 25. very limited seating. link in @korbykorby bio for tix and info.

this lives rent free in my head

I was adopted from Seoul as a baby and plopped into a family of Appalachians (eastern kentuckians to be exact). When I moved to Nashville I took voice and diction lessons from @nettiemaekraft because I couldn’t shake the twang!! A Korean girl with a hillbilly accent was confusing casting lol

This was one of the first exercises we did.. anyway, can we make this an actor challenge? Who can do it faster than 7 sec?? by @randanewman

I actually have an Aunt Betsy. I sent her the script and asked if she would record herself. She did 2 takes. This was the first one. One of the the most gratifying things about making something from nothing is that moments like this one, where I made decisions based on lack of budget, ended up being the most organic, memorable, and meaningful to me. I’ve talked to so many people lately who are balancing a creative life with a whole other corporate life, and honestly, I felt very validated 😂

Some may ask.. what does “balancing both” actually look like?

Working while you’re working
Working while you’re on PTO
Wrapping a 14-hour day then showing up for your clients or teammates at 7am

Sometimes I think I’d like to throw one of these lives away and live a much simpler existence but truthfully.. I can’t get enough of both!!!

My corporate life teaches me so much about leadership, service, strategy, and how to show up for people. But my creative life asks me to lean into vulnerability, art, instinct, and fun for god’s sake

Somehow, they keep making each other better. What do they say? Variety is the spice of life lol
