Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Day 6.

This was supposed to be a seven-day trek.

I didn’t share much about it at the time because I didn’t want to create unnecessary concern back home, but on Day 4 we learned that a major storm was moving into the region.

So the plan changed. We reached Annapurna Base Camp, took in as much of that incredible place as we could, and immediately started descending. Instead of sleeping at ABC, we pushed all the way back to Dovan. Get low. Get out.

It was the right decision.

By this morning, after a night of incredible rain and thunderstorms in Chhomrong, the mountains were saturated. We hiked down expecting to meet our ride.

There was no ride. The road was largely impassable.

So we walked.

We passed washed-out pavement, enormous boulders, rockfall, water pouring across the road and sections where the mountainside was giving way. At one point the slope began actively sliding while we were crossing and we had to run as rocks and debris came down.

We found a vehicle, rode until the next blockage, walked, found another ride, walked again, and eventually climbed around a section where the river had completely reclaimed the road.

We finally found our driver.

Then his gear shifter broke.

Because apparently Nepal wasn’t finished with us yet.

Somewhere in all of this I also discovered my first Himalayan leech. I just laughed.

And eventually, we made it to Pokhara.

Six days ago I walked into the Himalayas wondering what this would be like. What followed exceeded everything I imagined.

I saw the most beautiful mountains I’ve ever seen. I discovered my body was capable of far more than I realized. And I stood at Annapurna Base Camp at 13,550 feet feeling incredibly small in the best possible way.

Then the mountain reminded me who was actually in charge.

The mountain decides.

I’ve traveled a lot and had some incredible experiences. Nothing compares to this.

The biggest adventure of my life.

So there really was only one song for the final reel: The adventure of a lifetime. And it absolutely was. taken in Annapurna Base Camp Trek by @randchap

Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Day 5.

The weather finally became part of the adventure today. Heavy rain has moved into the region, the mountains have completely disappeared into the clouds, and getting out of the Himalayas may be a little more interesting than planned.

Fortunately, Chhomrong provided alternative entertainment: thousands and thousands of stone steps.

I climbed them. I filmed them. Then I sped them up so you don’t have to spend two hours watching me climb them. taken in Chhomrong by @randchap

Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Day 4.

We made it. 13,550 feet in the Himalayas.

This one means a lot.

It started as an idea, became a goal, turned into months of training, and this morning became a memory I’ll have for the rest of my life.

I’m grateful for a body that carried me here. Grateful for a wife who understands that wanderlust is simply part of who I am. And grateful to rediscover something I think I’d forgotten: the mountains are still very much in this Colorado boy’s blood.

We didn’t get the postcard view today. The clouds came and went, giving us only brief windows into the enormous peaks surrounding us.

Strangely, I wouldn’t change it.

Those glimpses were enough to understand their scale. Enough to stand there at 13,550 feet and feel incredibly, wonderfully small.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Day 3.

5,003 feet of climbing today. The first time I’ve climbed 5,000 feet in a day in more than 20 years.

But that’s not what I’ll remember.

I’ll remember looking around again and again and wondering how one place could possibly be this beautiful. I’ve traveled a lot of the world, and I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like the Himalayas. And it’s not even close.

Tonight: Deurali at 10,500’.

Tomorrow, Annapurna Base Camp. 🏔️ taken in Deurali, Annapurna, Nepal by @randchap

Annapurna Base Camp: Day 2.

3,700 feet up. 3,200 feet down. An unreasonable number of stone steps.

Somehow, I loved every one of them.

Australia, you were everything I needed. Ten days split between diving the Great Barrier Reef and unwinding in the Daintree Rainforest — pure magic. Went from zero to open water certified, and I’m officially hooked. 🌏🐠🌿 #GreatBarrierReef #DaintreeRainforest #SoloTravel #ScubaLife by @randchap
