This is one from Scientist of the Year category. Prof Matt Gilliham was keen for something with a bit more energy so we cut this one a bit quicker. I had this idea of filming Matt’s interview out at Roseworthy in a field that disappeared into the distance. I was thinking an interstellar vibe but there was just too much traveling to make this worthwhile so we filmed at the Waite instead. I hate cliches and I try really hard to avoid them and one cliche I hate the most is the backlit hand running through the grass in slo mo but Matt suggested doing the gladiator shot so sometimes you just gotta embrace it, right? Matt’s was a great interview and there was so much I could have put in but as Billy Joel said, if you want to have a hit, you gotta make it fit. For this years awards I used a couple of recently recorded tracks from @thegenevieves . This track in this song was pretty much the soundtrack for this years awards. It has the perfect energy and builds in all the right places. I believe this one will be released (with vocals) early in the year. Science Awards 2024. Infant mortality and the science behind understanding why it happens is not easy to communicate in a couple of minutes without acknowledging the unimaginable grief of losing a child. We always try and focus on the human impact and less on how the science is done. I had this idea of showing all these dedicated scientists working tirelessly behind the scenes. @alexandermrobertson had the idea of ultra slow mo imagery layered over the top of each other. I couldn’t quite see it at the time but often one of us will say “I don’t quite get it but if you think it will work, let’s do it” It’s a good example of how we bounce ideas around and work together. It’s rarely just one persons vision. by @randylarcombe

Another Science Award campaign done. I love this job. I love Science but I also like rush of doing an interview, stills and b-roll in a sub 4 hour timeslot. It forces you make decisions and make it work. My collaborator @alexandermrobertson and I have it down to a fine art now. Plan as much as you can but be prepared to ditch those plans and wing it if you have to. Whatever needs to be done to get the most honest content. I’ll put up a few of my favorites. This one was a challenge, first with dialogue but then with visual edit which is Alex’s job. He did an amazing job in this one. Soundtrack @finnlarcombemusic by @randylarcombe

Part 2. Last film delivered. 11 films in two weeks including 1 in Melbourne done solo by @alexandermrobertson and @guykeulemans no idea how many interviews but at least 24, hundreds of pages of transcripts to work through. I’m at least half way through the editing now but still a big hill ahead.
