For the last few months, we’ve been cooking up something hot…a candidate forum for those who like their local politics with a bit of spice.

Comment "SPICY" to RSVP for Candidate Survivor Spokane!

With the primaries nearing and election season in full swing, we are so excited to invite you to join worker-owned news outlet RANGE Media and Washington’s premier youth-led civic engagement organization The Washington Bus Education Fund onstage for a candidate forum unlike any other; think Hot Ones meets Survivor meets local issues.

On Thursday, July 30 from 6 to 9 pm, we’ll be hosting Candidate Survivor: Spokane’s Spiciest Candidate Forum at the Overbluff Cellars in the Washington Cracker Building, and we would be honored to have you join us to watch as we put candidates running for Congressional District 5, State Legislative District 3 and State Legislative District 6 through the ringer.

The evening will begin at 6pm with candidates from the 6th Legislative district, followed by candidates from the 3rd Legislative district at 7 pm, and finally, candidates running for the 5th Congressional District at 8 pm. They’ll join our reporter onstage and go head-to-head with their district opponent, eating spicier food and answering spicier questions about their campaigns and their big plans for our region.

🔥Get your tickets today: https://bit.ly/SpicyCS26

Questions? Shoot us an email at erin@rangemedia.co! We look forward to getting spicy with you. taken in Overbluff Cellars by @rangemedia4all

At RANGE, we’ve never believed it’s our role to merely report on the suffering we see around us. As a worker-owned newsroom, we feel it’s our duty to use the information and tools at our disposal to ease suffering in our community whenever we can.

That’s why we’ve partnered with local organizations Waters Meet and Spokane Community Against Racism (SCAR) to create Spokane.food, an interactive map of the places in our region where you can get support for food insecurity, or give support, if you’re in a place to help.

No one in our community should go hungry, and we know a lack of accessible information on resources contributes to neighbors suffering. Spokane.food is a simple, one-stop shop to direct folks to, where they can find the resource closest to them.

You can join us in stepping up for our community by supporting one of the resources taking donations or by adding information on any additional food insecurity resources you’re aware of through the Google Form linked on Spokane.food. You can also help us by noting if anything is inaccurate. Please share any feedback by commenting on the spreadsheet linked on the page. We will be checking this spreadsheet on a regular basis to keep information as up to date as possible.

This map covers 7 counties, 3 Sovereign Tribal Nations and beyond. Join us in caring for our friends, neighbors and regional community at Spokane.food or the link in our bio! taken in Spokane, Washington by @rangemedia4all

Starting in 2029, the Millionaires Tax, signed by Gov. Bob Ferguson this March, would tax Washington households at 9.9% on any income they make over $1 million.

But chances are you’re safe — even if you have a million dollars squirreled away in the bank. As long as your household isn’t unlucky enough to be pulling in $1 million a year in income, you will be spared.

Right now, there are fewer than 500 people in the three legislative districts that make up most of Spokane County who would qualify for the tax, according to Washington Department of Revenue data, and you most likely aren’t one of them. Unless, of course, you're one of the notable exceptions (hello Mark Few!).

Read up on the effort to repeal the Millionaires Tax that appears on your ballot at the link in bio or rangemedia.co/spokane-election-2026/. Black poster-style graphic from RANGE titled “Who Wants To Tax a Millionaire?” with the subtitle “Supporters of the Millionaires Tax focus on the ‘Millionaires’ — opponents focus on the ‘tax.’” and byline “BY DANIEL WALTERS.” A TV screen at the bottom shows a polling question, “What is the likelihood that you, personally, will have to pay the Millionaires Tax?” with answers A: 0%, B: 1%, C: 0.5%, and D: 5%.

Proponents of the ballot measure argue that it would give parents broader and faster access to records, more curriculum transparency and more control over their kids’ education.

Opponents argue that if the measure passes, the restored law would discourage students from seeking mental health support, remove privacy protections for child abuse victims and force the the school district to out transgender and queer students.

During this year’s primary elections, then-auditor candidate Dale Whitaker paid nearly $13,000 to send hundreds of thousands of texts to Spokane County voters. One of his opponents, Spokane City Council Member Michael Cathcart, listed 75 pieces of rebar under campaign expenditures.

Sheriff John Nowels has raised nearly $60,000 this year to run his race — unopposed.

Incumbent legislative candidate Natasha Hill spent $500 for the billboard design and social media campaign proclaiming she “has great jeans,” a spoof on the controversial ad from fellow Spokane blue-jean-wearer Sydney Sweeney. Meanwhile, her seatmate hopeful, Luc Jasmin III, spent $43.60 to buy 80 Pride flags from Amazon.com.

Prosecutor candidate Preston McCollam shelled out $36.85 for legal pads and a new pen, and another $544.99 for a new laptop. State legislative candidate Jonathan Bingle spent $1,537.18 on “phone and phone accessories.”

We found all this information without making a single phone call — and you can too! In the texts, which were added to court records as part of discovery in the Musselman family’s wrongful death lawsuit against the Spokane Police Department, the officers were trying to figure out how they would justify their presence at the scene. Steve Bray's lawsuit against Sean Feucht is the latest development in a years-long saga involving the worship pastor, his ambitious and lucrative Christian nationalist organizing and the Inland Northwest. It highlights how Feucht — a litigious personality who has sued the City of Spokane for millions of dollars over a dispute about another of his concerts — uses local organizing hubs to advance his agenda. And it shows how the Spokane area is a wellspring for Christian nationalist organizing efforts. Read our report at the link on our bio. A donor is suing worship pastor Sean Feucht, claiming Feucht may have spent his $250K donation on personal real estate rather than the concert tour it was intended for. by @rangemedia4all

ProPublica has been reporting for months on the Trump administration’s efforts to issue new regulations on mail-in voting, gather state voter data and investigate voter eligibility ahead of the November elections. They spoke with experts on mail-in voting to answer practical questions about voting by mail. Read their story in RANGE at the link in our bio. The Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration from imposing new rules on mail-in voting before the November midterm elections. That means nothing has changed for voters — and mail-in voting can proceed as planned. by @rangemedia4all

Before the primaries, we asked candidates running for local office a series of questions and some of them even answered. We cleaned up the clutter and pared down our questionnaires to just the candidates who survived in the primaries to help you make your decision in the general election!

From skyrocketing cost of living to public safety to what could happen to the millionaires tax, we covered a lot of ground. See where candidates running for Congress, WA Legislature, state Supreme Court and Spokane County Auditor land.

See them all at the link in bio!

New taxes, upcoming lobbying efforts, and one of our favorite RANGE events --- we've got a big week:

🍻It’s PolitiCrawl this Friday!!! That means you can (and should) join us on a politics-themed barcrawl downtown, using the Spokane City Line to get from bar to bar. We’ll chat with local politicians, aspiring candidates and each other about the pressing local issues. We’ll also drink beer. It’s a good time, and you should come!

🚓Spokane City Council will vote on imposing a new 0.1% public safety sales tax that would go into effect January 2027. This is in addition to the county’s new public safety sales tax.

📋At the Public Infrastructure, Environment, and Sustainability Committee meeting, the city council members will discuss setting their lobbying priorities for the 2027 legislative session. There’s one really interesting proposal — an effort that could shift property tax burden away from home and business owners and onto land speculators.

🚌The Spokane Transit Authority is taking public feedback on their Wellesley Corridor Development plan, which could change transit along Wellesley Avenue in north Spokane.

📋The Board of County Commissioners and the Spokane Valley City Council are both establishing their legislative agendas for what they will advocate for from the state of Washington and the federal government.

🚓The Spokane Valley City Council will host a public hearing on its budget for 2027, which focuses on infrastructure projects and expanding the police force.

Employees formed the WAISN Workers Collective in early September, prompted in part by what it described as WAISN’s financial crisis, an earlier round of layoffs, reduced hours and a perceived lack of transparency.

At the end of the month, WAISN laid off 14 people, including most of the workers in the union effort, leaving the entire organization at a lower capacity amid a surge in immigration enforcement. The workers allege the layoffs were in retaliation for unionizing and have filed seven Unfair Labor Practice Charges with the the National Labor Relations Board.

Read the story at the link in bio.
