Election Day is less than two weeks away, and Washington voters have the opportunity to defeat I-645, which would give the ultra-wealthy a tax break at the expense of funding for healthcare, schools, and other critical programs.

Associate Director of Campaigns Emily Vyhnanek spoke with Range Media about I-645 in this piece, "Who wants to tax a millionaire?" In it, Emily made a strong case for voting against this initiative in order to uphold the Millionaires Tax, a commonsense policy that will support our communities and help improve our state's inequitable tax code.

The nonprofit poised to take over The Spokesman-Review at the end of October plans to keep suspended executive editor Rob Curley in a leadership role, drawing renewed opposition from the newspaper’s union.

On October 2nd, @investigate.west and @rangemedia4all reported on employee allegations of retaliation and ethical breaches under Curley's leadership of the Spokesman-Review.

But leaders at Comma, the nonprofit that is set to takeover the newspaper on Oct. 30, have told union members that Curley will oversee the philanthropic side of the business and also keep a seat on the board, according to an Oct. 20 statement by the Spokane Editorial Society, the collective bargaining unit for nonexempt newsroom employees.

MORATORIUM NOW!
Community members marched on Oct. 4th from the Riverfront Park Rotary Fountain to the Spokane County Courthouse and back to demand a moratorium and strict regulations on AI data centers across Washington state.

There was a powerful lineup of local speakers with chants like, "What's that stench? Al French!" Spokane loves its river and water, and we won't let it be put at risk.

Last year, Spokesman-Review editor Rob Curley laid out a promising vision to transfer the 143-year-old, family-owned newspaper to a nonprofit he founded. But that vision has run into persistent concerns within the Spokesman-Review newsroom about his leadership, culminating in his suspension from the paper and a vote of no confidence from the union.

Wilson Criscione of @investigate.west and Daisy Zavala Magaña of @rangemedia4all report on how Curley lost the faith of his newsroom. Click the link in our bio to read the story.

"There will always be a need for clinics." - Mercedes Sanchez, Cedar River Clinics, Executive Director

A new UW study shows that although telehealth medication abortion has increased abortion access across the US, there will always be a need for in-person procedural abortions in abortion-friendly states like Washington State. Thank you to the incredible @miburbank for writing this insightful piece!

In black and bright green letters, the headline reads "Abortion pills forever?" Below is a subheader reading that reads, "Telehealth was supposed to simplify getting an abortion. UW researchers found a messier reality on the ground, affecting in-person reproductive care in states like Washington." There is a photo above the headline that is an image of a laptop and of Cedar River Clinics's website.

Even before the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, abortion pills dominated public discussions: framed by activists in Washington State and beyond as a seamless way to maintain access should state-level policies jeopardize care.

But a new UW study shows that, when delivered via telehealth, accessing medication abortions is far from seamless.

In her reporting for CHUM News and RANGE Media, journalist Megan Burbank (@miburbank) highlights how patients have to deal with frequently shifting legal considerations; weigh privacy concerns; wrangle a lack of information about medication abortion; and confront longstanding misinformation campaigns designed to dissuade people from seeking abortions.

The study’s findings likely affect what abortion care will look like in Washington State in the coming years: Who will continue to seek it out, and from where?

Out-of-state patients have long relied on Washington providers for abortions; post-Roe legal conditions have made that dynamic all the more pronounced. Washington’s abortion providers will probably continue to see significant demand for in-person care — and telehealth is unlikely to shift that reality.

CHUM News and RANGE Media are teaming up: Starting tomorrow, and over the coming months and years, we’ll regularly work together to report and co-publish stories that impact people across Washington State.

We met up this summer in Wenatchee to swap underreported local news stories that will inevitably affect everyone in the state. Huddled in our camping chairs along the banks of the Columbia River, we discussed timely developments spanning the realms of immigration enforcement, homelessness policy, and sports & culture. (You can listen to our conversation via our link in bio.)

Putting our heads together, we realized we’d best serve our readerships by working collaboratively when the occasion calls for it: pooling our resources to cover stories across a wider range of topics and geographies, helping contextualize the developments you see in your neighborhood by occasionally zooming out.

We’re publishing our first joint piece tomorrow (Monday, Aug 24). It certainly won’t be the last; so please DM/email us with tips and feedback + help shape our work together.

Yesterday the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted to pass a 4-month data center moratorium. This is progress, but the temporary term for the moratorium is cause for concern.

The community has been in uproar advocating against the construction of data centers, and it is essential that we continue to apply pressure to our local politicians!

Go to Rangemedia.co to read more about this moratorium, and learn about the discourse about data centers amongst the bipartisan BOCC.

We almost did it! You almost made it happen! An independent came within 257 votes in a deep red district! That means we had Republicans, Democrats, and Independents vote for us!

Change is possible, and we're slowly showing people how!

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in any way! We couldn't have done any of this without you. We don't plan on letting you down either. We'll take this momentum, and build on it.

There are still issues, and they have to listen to us when we are organized!

Thanks, in particular, to Jack Gregory, my campaign manager! He worked on a volunteer basis. We were truly a grassroots campaign, with dedicated, hard working people!

Look for information regarding District Policy Councils coming in the near future, let's make sure they have to listen to us!

Let's make sure we get the one Independent who made it through the primary, all the way through to the County Prosecutor's office. Vote @dannyforprosecutor in November!
