Sunrise at the abandoned control room, and two self portraits.

The power plant was built in 1914, and the art deco control room was designed by Kálmán Reichl and Virgil Borbiró in 1927.

Although it provided 60% of power for Budapest back in the day, and could be easily targeted, this power plant wasn’t bombarded during WWII surprisingly.

The power plant is now mostly empty but luckily the control room is protected by Hungarian law, which forbids of any kind of renovation and demolition.

I’m happy to finally see this place after so many years.

The abandoned space shuttle part of Buran Project in Baikonur, Kazakhstan.

The hike started 3pm, total 78km (50 miles) with 40lbs on my back including 9L of water (I’m 97lbs); mostly in the dark, moon went down around 10pm, and arrived in the hangar around 5am.

Camped inside for 40 hours, came out 10pm and hiked out.

Message me if you have more questions. Happy to help.

Turbine hall of an abandoned power plant in Shanghai.

Built in 1958, this small power plant was later on combined into and became the famous Shanghai Chongming Electric Company. The original plant had 3 steam turbine generators and 2 diesel generators, and in 1971 it was expanded to the current scale.

Due to the growing needs of clean power and technology developments in China, the plant was closed in 2018. For these 6 steam turbines in the main hall (numbered as 13, 14A and B, 15A and B, and 16), they were shut down in December 2010.

(Number 10 and 12 are in an older hall, however I have no idea where number 1 to 9 is located).

The Ghost Stations of Beijing’s Subway Line 1

If you’ve taken Beijing Subway Line 1, you’d have noticed the station number starts from 103. What happened to 101 and 102? They have stood for nearly 60 years without appearing on the modern subway map, earning them the nickname “Ghost Stations.”

Stories about these stations have circulated online for years. Some claim that if you miss your stop, the train will take you to another world. Others say the abandoned platforms occasionally light up late at night. The real history, however, is fascinating enough without the legends.

In 1965, Beijing Metro began planning a route designed primarily for military transportation, with some civilian service. The first section opened in October 1969, and 1971 the metro began regular service. Passengers needed a letter from their workplace to ride, and a one-way ticket cost just 10 cents. Visitors from outside the city could also obtain a temporary ticket through local residents.

By 1973, the line had been extended and the western end of the map stopped at Station 103. The other two stations, however, had already entered its unusual second life.

The station was never completely abandoned. For decades, they were used for training and other purposes. Before 2006, the stations were left open, some residents nearby would even go in to enjoy the free air conditioner in summer. In 2009, however, both entrance were sealed behind a retractable iron gate.

The archives reveal an even stranger detail. On the original blueprints, this station in the photo was officially labeled “Sanatorium Station,” named after a nearby railway sanatorium.

in 2021, these Stations began preparations for renovation, with work expected to finish by late 2023. In June 2026, Beijing Metro announced a major development: after nearly six decades, approximately $10M USD would be invested to upgrade the station and add emergency exits.

Once hidden behind locked gates for generations, this Ghost Station may finally be preparing to reopen its doors.

Constructed in 1912, this fine arts school originally served as an elementary and middle school, educating local students from first through eighth grade.

In its later years, the campus was rebranded as an Academy of Music, operating as a county-level specialized school with a focus on music and the performing arts, preparing students for advanced arts programs.

Despite its historic significance, the century-old building lacked the infrastructure required for 21st-century education. Prior to its closure in 2009, hundreds of thousands of dollars were invested in repairs, including addressing leaking roofs, replacing the indoor gymnasium floor, and dealing with asbestos. However, the absence of essential facilities, such as modern computer labs, professional-grade theaters, and television production studios, ultimately led to the conclusion that the aging structure could no longer meet the school’s needs, necessitating the construction of a new campus.

10 years ago, in the summer of 2015, I randomly stepped into an abandoned waterpark, without knowing this would quietly shape the next decade of my life.

10 years have passed, I’ve met countless people sharing the same interest, and some became friends; visited many small towns which I’d otherwise pass by; wrote more than 200,000 words and published a book; had one camera, Nikon D750, for 9 years which was broken this spring.

For the decade, my presence before the lens was rare, and these 15 self portrait described it perfectly.
