RS 015 — White River

Year: 2018
Title: White River
Artist: Primal Code @primalcode_music
Label: Hypnus Records @hypnusrecords
Catalog #: HYPNUS019

An extraordinary gem off the beaten path, this track by Primal Code stands out as my favorite discovery of 2024 and arguably one of the finest examples of deep techno I’ve ever encountered. In music, the principle of ‘less is more’ often holds true, and it’s a philosophy that Primal Code—the Italian duo of Davide Perrone and Gabriele Gilgioli—embrace masterfully in their work.

“White River” is perhaps the crown jewel of their 2018 album “La Via Della Seta”, though the entire album unfolds as a breathtaking journey from start to finish.

The album artwork itself is stunning, depicting a picturesque, ancient-looking settlement along the bank of a serene river, with boats gliding gracefully through the water—a perfect visual companion to the album’s meditative soundscapes. Adding to its allure, the release is pressed on beautiful limited edition white-marbled vinyl, making it as much a visual treasure as an auditory one.

The release label, Hypnus, is arguably one of the most forward-thinking labels in existence today, a true treasure trove for this genre of music.

The label embodies a rare and cohesive artistic identity—both musically and visually—reminiscent of legendary labels like Pete Namlook’s Fax +49-69/450464. Founded by @micheliseneld, the label has cultivated a close-knit community of producers and fans through platforms like Patreon and Discord. Here, members engage in discussions about production techniques, participate in challenges, and even vote on tracks and release artwork for the democratically run Hypnus sub-label, Aedi Records. The main Hypnus Records roster features a carefully selected group of artists, including @feral.heruka, Primal Code, @birdsovparadise, and @rambadu_, each showcasing exceptional production mastery and a distinct sound.

In every sense, Hypnus Records and artists like Primal Code continue to redefine the boundaries of deep techno, offering not just music, but immersive journeys that linger long after the final note fades. by @rareslate

RS 014 — The Way To Your Love

Year: 2001
Title: The Way To Your Love
Artist: Hear’Say
Remix: Mark Picchiotti Dub Mix @djmarkpicchiotti
Label: Polydor
Catalog #: Hear’Say4

Hidden gem alert! Here’s a track that’s about as obscure as it gets—and for good reason. If you look up the original artist, Hear’Say, you’ll find an early 2000s British pop group, similar to the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, or Take That. Formed through the British talent show Popstars, akin to American Idol, they were a quintessential product of their time.

The music video for The Way to Your Love is almost comically overproduced, featuring the ethnically diverse lineup of three women and two men frolicking, singing, and pouring buckets of water on each other’s heads—more reminiscent of a department store ad than anything remotely underground.

Enter Mark Picchiotti. A producer/remixer with numerous credits to his name, his work had flown under my radar until I stumbled upon a mysterious YouTube upload titled simply “Progressive House ID.” The video, set to the iconic photo of the Twilo queue, featured a captivating progressive house track. Some even speculated that it might have been played by Danny Tenaglia during his legendary Twilo sets.

Months later, the track was finally identified as the Mark Picchiotti Dub Mix of “The Way to Your Love”—a total reinvention that transformed the cheesy pop original (which admittedly has become a guilty pleasure) into something completely unexpected.

Shoutout to @bogdannicolaecojocaru for putting me onto this one.

Cheers,
David

RS 013 — The DJ’s Took Pills

Year: 2004
Title: The DJ’s Took Pills
Artist: @piganddan
Label: Sadie Records
Catalog #: SADIE 017

Massive tune from Pig & Dan, among the most consistent producers of the last 2 decades. First heard this one in a fantastic 2004 set uploaded to YouTube from @yunusguvenen in Hungary (my father’s homeland) at Aquapark, Mogyoród for The Debút (though one commenter on YouTube suggests it was The Debút resident moonline_official who played the first hour with this track).

One of the best sets I’ve heard and there will be more tracks from it. Of course this track is not particularly rare, I am saving the rare stuff for later posts.

Oh- almost forgot, this track samples Jim Morrison from The Doors. An instantly recognizable voice.

Cheers,
David

RS 012 – We Rise

Year: 2024
Title: We Rise
Artist: @sans1bar
Label: Sin Sistema @sinsistema.label
Catalog #: SINS001

An incredible first track released earlier this year on Sansibar’s own Sin Sistema label.

For years I wondered where I might be able to find new music of the classic/simplistic/hypnotic style of trance-techno whatever you want to call it. Sansibar by far does it best. Having been unfamiliar with Sansibar before luckily wandering into @nowadaysnyc and catching his set in 2022, I knew he was someone to pay attention to after hearing him play 90s classics from the Lunatec label. The set was completely fresh and fast paced, and every track of his I’ve listened to delivers.

First post in a while, life gets so busy it’s difficult to find the time. Many more on deck.

RS 011 — Soliton Wave

Year: 2001
Title: Soliton Wave
Artist: Our House @kaseytaylor @seanquinndj
Label: Global Recordings
Catalog Number: GROH001
Mix CD: GU 022 Melbourne (Slowed Version) @daveseamandj @global_underground

Massive tune from Australian duo Sean Quinn and Vapour Recordings founder Kasey Taylor.

A fantastic slowed version of this track was released exclusively as part of Dave Seaman’s Global Underground 022: Melbourne mix compilation. Dave famously uses it to kick off disc 1. It was the first set by Dave I had ever listened to!

This original mix, however, kicks up the energy to level 10 while retaining all of the standout elements– my personal favorite the submarine-like “sonar” ping!

RS 010 — Sweet Lullaby

Year: 1992
Title: Sweetwater Lullaby (Remix)
Artist: Deep Forest @deepforestofficial
Label: Columbia / Dance Pool

Long before I had ever heard Northern Exposure, or even had the faintest idea about the various styles of electronic music, I was exposed to the music of Deep Forest.

My father had a diverse and eclectic taste in music, and one of the albums on our regular rotation on trips/long car rides was the self titled “Deep Forest” debut album. Surely, several of the tracks included must have been imprinted into my subconscious-as over a decade after my initial encounter with Deep Forest, I stumbled upon their music again, this time through Sasha & Digweed’s ‘Northern Exposure’ featuring their remix of Apollo 440’s ‘Liquid Cool’—which is also the first post on this page.

Deep Forest was formed by Michel Sanchez & Eric Mouquet, after Sanchez came up with the idea of mixing native Baka pygmy spoken word with modern music after hearing on-site recordings of these tribes conversing. This idea earned Sanchez & Mouquet a Grammy nomination for the “Deep Forest” album.

“Sweet Lullaby” was the top single from the album, earning the group a spot in the UK top ten. The track makes incredible use of samples, even including Baka water drumming in addition to the language and chants of the tribes. That said, musically, the track is incredibly strong. Evoking strong emotions, feelings of longing, nostalgia, and wonder. It’s as though Mouquet and Sanchez translated the contemplation of human existence into a musical journey. This extended version of the track allows the listener to really soak in atmosphere and musicality of the tracks before the vocal samples are introduced.

A very special track for me indeed. It was also remixed by Apollo 440, for a club friendly take on the track.

RS 009 — Psychout (Alone)

Year: 1998
Title: Psychout (Alone)
Artist: Slacker
Label: Jukebox In The Sky
Catalog Number: JTS 001
Mix CD: Global Underground 008: Brazil @djnickwarren

The extraordinary legacy left by the legendary duo Shem McCauley and Simon Rogers is unmatched by most artists in the progressive house scene.

Together as both Ramp and Slacker, the two achieved a signature sound that was both distinctive and endlessly diverse, offering a constant source of refreshment.

The release of Slacker’s “Psychout” in 1998 showcased their talents by offering listeners FOUR different versions of the same song. Each version forged of the same DNA, and yet wildy different from the next.

I suspect the first version of “Psychout” to have been completed was “Thing” as this is the version that appears to have been cut to all of the acetates prior to release. It seems all of the major DJs were each equipped with Slacker’s latest material cut to acetates in their bags. In many cases the versions on these acetates differed slightly to their final release counterparts. I assume excitedly, McCauley – the frontman of the group – would share these unfinished versions via DAT tape, before continuing to apply the finishing touches to each track.

All of this said, my personal favorite version of Psychout, would be the second version on the final release, “Alone”.

Compared to the other mixes, this version has a real dystopian feel to it. I suspect there to be a strong Future Sound of London influence, specifically their “Dead Cities” album. I have no direct evidence of this, but I believe “Alone” samples directly from the Dead Cities album–specifically the beginning of “My Kingdom”. To my ears, the resemblance is uncanny. When it comes to sampling, McCauley and Rogers were master manipulators – I would not be surprised if the track was almost entirely sample based.

“Psychout (Alone)” was used famously by Nick Warren to open CD2 of his Global Underground 008: Brazil mix compilation.

RS 008 — Clear

Year: 2002
Title: Clear
Artist: Airmale
Label: Star 69 Records @star69records
Catalog Number: star 12281

Something a bit different for today.

I discovered this track recently and immediately bought a copy. At the core of the track is a bassline–unwavering in its cadence and pitch–which cuts right through the mix. Lively percussion and regularly spaced brass hits help to build and sustain the track’s momentum. The sum total of these elements begging to be played on a proper club system for some floor shaking madness.

The true star of the show, however, are the cleverly sourced movie dialog samples embedded throughout the track. Indeed, even the title of the track is derived from these samples.

“Are we clear?”

The unmistakable voice of Jack Nicholson in his portrayal of Col. Jessup in the 1992 film “A Few Good Men” is first heard 1 minute and 30 seconds into the track- immediately prior to the introduction of the track’s core bass. The vocal is pitched down, lending it a more sinister feel.

As the track progresses, other samples are introduced - including a more irate version of Nicholson’s “are we clear?!” line.

All of this culminates 6 minutes into the track. Nicholson’s aggravated line is delivered once more, and suddenly all of the track elements vanish, save for a single suspenseful synth drone, and the voice of Tom Cruise’s character in the film repeatedly answering

“Crystal”

Until the track once again builds up its energy.

With “A Few Good Men” among my favorite films and Airmale’s no nonsense/club ready sound, this track easily became an instant buy.

RS 007 — Mammal (Mix I)

Year: 1994
Title: Mammal (Mix I)
Artist: Virtual Symmetry
Label: Eye Q Records @svenvaeth_official
Catalog Number: EYE Q - 021

Perhaps the finest trance label of all time, Eye Q throughout the 90s boasted a roster of producers who understood “trance” in the true sense of the word. Pioneers of a genre that had yet to be truly defined.

I remember when I first discovered the label. It was as though I had stumbled upon an ancient treasure trove of undisturbed classics—akin to the Tomb of Tutankhamun.

Compared to the music of today, the sound of the early Eye Q tracks is rather stripped down and basic. Only the essential few elements exist in each track, and they are more than enough. This era of trance teaches us that indeed “less is more” when it comes to production. There is a truly hypnotic/mesmerizing quality to the early Eye Q masterpieces.

This track from Virtual Symmetry (Gerald Becker) is no exception.

RS 004 — Etana’s Flight

Year: 1997
Title: Etana’s Flight
Artist: Sunday Club (Marc Mitchell, @djstuartking)
Label: Stress Records @daveseamandj @nickgb_music.ita @stressrecords_
CD: Zeitgeist: New Wave Club Culture

A start to finish masterpiece from Jersey legends Marc Mitchell & Stuart King AKA Sunday Club! Each track from Sunday Club is a unique journey, their tracks almost never end the same way they begin. Much like a symphony, Etana’s Flight evolves throughout several “movements” as it plays- in fact it was difficult to narrow it down into less than one minute for this reel! Marc Mitchell’s piano virtuoso skills – a hallmark of Sunday Club productions – can be heard on full display!

This track was championed out in sets from DJs such as Dave Seaman (who was Stress Records label boss). Almost all of Sunday Club’s productions were released on Stress. This particular track was only ever released as part of a Stress Records compilation called “Zeitgeist: New Wave Club Culture” for both CD and Vinyl.
