During a recent screening phone call I had with a hospice agency, I told them, “I come from a legacy of care…” It was important that they understood where I come from and why I advocate so fiercely. My mother worked as a registered nurse for decades and my father was a hospital chaplain for the same amount of time before they both retired. When people have asked me how I’m able to caregive for the both of them, I’ve come to recognize that “caregiving” is simply in my DNA. I literally grew up watching them care for and love on people my entire life. It is the honor of my life to give them the same care they dedicated their lives to giving to others.

So yes, as long as I’m able, I will be by their side, hospital and more. #caregiver #eldercare #multigen #explorepage #explore by @rasheedatv

Sometimes, it feels like pulling teeth trying to get updates from hospital staff about your loved one. I know hospitals are often understaffed (shot out to the unsung heroes who make time for the patient’s family too) , especially on weekends, but out of sight, should not mean out of mind for caregivers who simply request a short phone call from the assigned nurse on duty as to the health updates of said loved one. But if that happens, find another way to get the information you need! Register for a MyChart account online (most hospitals have it or a similar online portal) if you’re the health proxy and/or power of attorney. The latest updates, lab / test results, and visit notes *should* be listed there.

Try your hardest to be physically present in the hospital to advocate for your loved one. If not, good lucky trying to receive real updates and information. You will likely be given the run around just trying to get basic information and updates. If they can’t handle YOU with care, what gives you confidence that they’ll handle your loved one with care?

This is one of the hardest parts of caregiving: dealing with the disrespect, coldness, lack of concern and sheer incompetence of the so-called ’healthcare’ team when your loved one is hospitalized. It’s enough to give you a conniption. So, do your best to show up. Be there. Ask all the questions. Take names…of the doctors, specialists, care techs, nurses, nurse manager and if the hospital has one, the patient care advocate. It makes all the difference…often times between life and death. by @rasheedatv

As a caregiver, I cherish the moments when I get to go out and have a little fun! So in this premiere episode of CAREGIVER’S DAY OFF, I’m honoring Harry Potter’s July 31st birthday today by sharing the time I went to Universal Studios and visited Diagon Alley.

And would you believe…this was my first time going to Universal Studios since I’ve been living and caregiving in ORLANDO?! 🤦🏾‍♀️I knew I had to try the Butter Beer that so many folks rave about! If you’re not a Harry Potter head lol 🪄 you may not be familiar with Butter Beer. Butter Beer is a fictional, non-alcoholic drink from the Harry Potter stories that is served hot or cold. We went for cold…but did it live up to all the hype? Watch to find out!
