Highlights from the SAH 2025 Architecture of Sri Lanka Tour last month. Day 4 Afternoon: A visit to to Ena de Silva’s Matale Heritage Centre (now the Aluwihare Heritage Centre) established in 1964. The prolific batik and textile artist Ena de Silva (1922-2015) was a frequent collaborator of Geoffrey Bawa. In 1982 she reoccupied her ancestral home in the verdant hills of Matale and transformed it to a community cooperative run by women, many who still work and teach at the centre. We were fortunate to be given a tour by architect Amila de Mel, the director of the Ena de Silva Foundation, who has been overseeing archival and exhibition projects while safeguarding the vitality of the workshops and community. #SAH1365, #egarchla, #aluwihareheritagecentre by @ravigune.la

Highlights from the SAH 2025 Architecture of Sri Lanka Tour last month. Day 4 Afternoon: Padiwitha Ambalama (historic pilgrim/wayfarers rest shelter) in Matale. This well preserved ambalama is set among a vast sea of green paddy (rice) fields in a rural village north of Kandy. The history of ambalamas can be traced to the 4th century BCE, as pilgrim shelters established by Mauryan rulers, the most famous being the emperor Ashoka. Providers of shelter earned merit by being hospitable to travelers. The earliest surviving ambalama in Sri Lanka is likely the Awariyawala Ambalama, A simple wooden structure built by King Walagamba in the first century BCE. An elaborate stone structure commissioned by Queen Sunetradevi in the 14th century still stands in Southern Sri Lanka. Most in the Kandy region, such as this one are from the 18th or 19th centuries, featuring typical Kandyan style notched and carved wooden columns. #egarchla, #SAH1365, #ambalamas #srilanka, by @ravigune.la

Highlights from the SAH 2025 Architecture of Sri Lanka Tour last month. Day 3 Afternoon: A short visit to Jetwing Vil Uyana, at Sigiriya. The luxury eco-resort, designed by architect Sunela Jaywardena, is set within a nature sanctuary, preserving adjacent marsh land and paddy fields. Traditional building techniques were employed, including locally harvested materials, palm thatch roofs, and clay wall construction. Thanks to Jetwing CEO Hiran Cooray and the gracious Vil Uyana staff for accommodating our visit. @egarchla,@SAH1365,@jetwing.viluyana, sunela_j by @ravigune.la
