Project 2, 8A+/V12

I first tried this problem in September 2019. I don’t remember when it was benchmarked, but I remember trying to hold the positions before it was benched and wrote it off. I didn’t think I had the span. Over the next 6 I tried on and off. I still doubted that I had the reach. The second move alone spans 8 columns (D to K) and my span is 6’ even.

I watched strong climbers like @vadim_timonov and @benburrk climb it and was inspired. I tried the move to H14 statically for a month with no success. I asked @natedrolet for shoulder mobility exercises to help my posture and strength when fully extended. That helped enormously. I realized that I needed to develop explosiveness while spanned. I worked shoulders every session, started doing squats and hip mobility drills, fully extended pull ups. I focused every exercise on trying to send Project 2.

@dvsperanza3 and I began seriously trying together at the end of 2020 and I was inspired to watch him send earlier this year.

Regardless of what this Benchmark is graded, this is the hardest climb I’ve done on the board. Maybe ever. The point of this long caption is that I couldn’t have done it alone. I’m so appreciative of the Moonboard community. Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement over the past 18 months. Love and respect always. ❤️

A year ago I broke my foot and didn’t climb for almost 3 months. This was the longest break I had taken from climbing in the past 12 years. Shortly after breaking my foot I turned 30 and was convinced my hard climbing days were behind me. I was working 50-60 hour weeks and didn’t have as much training time as I did in the past. I used the Moonboard to help me get back into climbing, and even did my first couple sessions with one foot in a sneaker because I couldn’t fit into a climbing shoe. 297 benchmarks later and I still can’t believe I climbed this one. Thanks to everyone for the supportive messages along the way, it’s awesome to connect with so many people over a 40° training wall! ✌️❤️

With winter rolling in and better conditions on the horizon I wanted to share this first ascent I found at the end of last season. Located a few hundred yards from Ying Yang crack. It may feel more comfortable in colder temps, either way the rock and the moves make for a cool addition to the zone. by @raviolibiceps

2025 is almost over. The inevitable glance into the rear view mirror comes for us all. With this final post of the year here are the most memorable for me in each category.

Shosholoza - There are great boulders, then there are great “Fred Nicole” boulders. From Texas to South Africa to Switzerland and beyond, climbers are quick to point out when it’s a Fred boulder and rightfully so. I first tried this back in 2013 for a single session. It took 12 years to get back under it… seemed appropriate with what I was reading at the time.

The Iliad, The Odyssey and The Aeneid - I couldn’t choose one as my favorite this year and how could you anyway? Robert Fagles’ translation of these epics is vivid and immersive. Reading the Iliad in Rocklands only added to the experience. The impact these had on me was massive and I’m looking forward to rereading them for years to come.

Hope everyone is having a nice relaxing weekend, getting lots of climbing and reading and music in.

I got some great feedback on the newsletter structure and some suggestions on how to improve going forward. From now on each post will have a cover slide with the problem name, grade and board for easy navigation. I’m also including some extra photos of the books and records for those interested. Quotes, liner notes, color variants, back cover photos, etc.

Today we’re showcasing a 2024 problem that features a couple things unique to the set: “No kickboard” starts, underclings (or undercuts for the UK crew), and smeary delicate feet.

The True Requiem for Mary 7B+/V8 set by @moonclimbing has all of the above and you’ll see my left foot slip on the send. These features took a while for me to appreciate but the forced footwork on some of these problems can be satisfying and translate outdoors.

The Secret History (1992) is the debut novel by Donna Tartt. Published when she was 29, its exploration of the dark side of beauty, ancient literature and Dionysian frenzy make for a unique and gripping narrative.

Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) by Dissection needs no introduction and has cemented its place as a landmark of the black metal genre. Happy belated 30th birthday to this triumph! A perfect spin as winter approaches. by @raviolibiceps

⚔️Trying out something new going forward⚔️

Each post will now feature a board climb, a book, and a record.

I thought about fully dropping off social media and starting a newsletter featuring some stuff I’ve been enjoying and would recommend to other like minded maniacs, but ultimately decided to turn this page into that newsletter.

I’ve had some great conversations about board climbs, reading, and music with all of you and want to keep it going. A structure change like this also frees me up to post different boards and sets like Tension and Kilter.

Hope you all enjoy and keep forging ahead as always.

Off the grid for the last month spending some time in Rocklands. For all the development and improvement over the years it still feels like a place out of time.

Read a few books, listened to a lot of music, climbed boulders, fell off boulders, spent time with close friends and met a lot of cool and interesting people making their way to South Africa at all different points in their climbing careers. It’s rewarding to battle with the fellow stalwarts from all over the world and laugh at all the strange rituals involved with reaching the top of a boulder.
