MINDSCAPES FEATURED IN THE SATURDAY MONITOR (16th/08/2025)

As we enter the fifth week of my debut solo exhibition MindScapes, currently on display at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center in San Francisco, I’m thrilled to share the show’s feature in today’s Saturday Monitor, one of Uganda’s leading newspapers.

Grateful to Edgar R. Batte for the thoughtful feature, especially highlighting the moments from the opening reception held on July 10th while capturing the essence of my work as an artist. You are amazing.

MindScapes is a reflection on the essence of time, love, and memory, a tribute to our deep human connections in reference to the brain and their enduring relevance in a world that moves ever faster.

For those still intrested in passing by and checking it out, the exhibition runs through August 22nd at the Memory and Aging Center. Sincere thanks to everyone who has visited, and heartfelt appreciation to the incredible team supporting this journey.

I was recently featured in the Daily Monitor (A Ugandan Newspaper), where I shared the importance of raising dementia and brain health awareness in Uganda. I also discussed my motivation for applying to the Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health program at @gbhi_fellows , UCSF site.

This fellowship will enhance my understanding of brain health and neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. I look forward to collaborating with other fellows and experts to build healthier communities back home.

Welcome to my personal website blog section where I will be sharing monthly opinions and articles. 🤗✨

I start off this month with my personal reflections from Yasmina Benslimane’s article I read a couple of days back about “Proximity and Power”.

In her article, Yasmina Benslimane shares insights from over a decade of her working with top UN agencies, philanthropies and boardrooms. She launched her stance to challenge global systems while advocating fair compensation for time, labour rather than settling for exposure and just networking.

It is such a wake up call article for all young people advancing their work in this development world. I shared a few reflections in a blog on my website.

That’s a wrap on Guum’s Kitchen! 🎨

We painted the whole garden on one wall:

🍍 Pineapple for sweetness
🍌 Bananas for every morning
🌽 Corn for harvest season
🍉 Watermelon for sharing
And our last one — soursop for healing.

Five fruits, one kitchen, all Atat’s favorites.

From bare wall to full story — Guum’s Kitchen is now complete at @okerecity @memorymosaicsinitiative @elderscreativecircle

Come see it, come taste it. Guum aye Atat.
Much appreciation to my team for a very supportive assist in the execution of this whole project. @rawdneyk @kibirango_gabriel_ogal @ellydebuni @danaround @destinytga @nancy_nangobi @annie_sharmila_pink @faith_agumya_j

In @okerecity, dance is more than movement. It’s memory in motion.

Through rhythm, movement and shared cultural expression, the atats (grandmothers) and elders in the community connect with one another, stay active, share memories and celebrate the joy of being together.

Like Dr. Annie Pink (@annie_sharmila_pink) always says…”Dance reminds us that optimal Brain health is not only about the absence of disease; it’s also about connection, purpose, culture, movement and joy.”

This is the reason why through @memorymosaicsinitiative and the @elderscreativecircle project, we continue engaging with communities like these to make sure that everyone has a place to move, connect, create and belong. (especially our elders)

This video reel is a sneak peak into the recent community celebrations (GADi) the @elderscreativecircle project team put together with the community in Okere. Watch out for more of what transpired. ✨🤗

The newest wall in @okerecity 🌽

Guum’s, Atat’s kitchen just got a harvest.

From bare wall to a kernel of corn — because food is more than what’s on the plate. It’s on the walls, in the stories, and in the hands that make it.

Guum = Luck.

“We didn’t just paint FOR them. We painted WITH them. 👩🏿‍🦳👨🏿‍🦳”

This moment right here is the real mural.

The elders of @okerecity picking up brushes, adding color, laughing, guiding us. Their hands have built homes, farmed fields, raised generations — today they painted their own story.

That communal painting is powerful. It brings connection, it sparks memories, it creates joy, and it keeps the brain active and well. It says: you are seen, you are still creating, you still belong.

This is the heart of @memorymosaicsinitiative Much thanks to my team there @rawdneyk @kibirango_gabriel_ogal @annie_sharmila_pink @ellydebuni @destinytga @danaround and many others

This wall is called “Ot Atat”, meaning Grandmother’s Hut. And in Okere City, it is not just a structure — it is the heart of the home.

Ot Atat is where wisdom lives. Where grandchildren gather to listen. Where stories of struggle, survival, love, and laughter have been passed down for generations. It is memory, safety, warmth, and roots — all in one hut.

To paint on this sacred space was deeply humbling for me.

What many don’t see is what happens _during_ the painting. The elders sat with us, talked, laughed, corrected us, told stories, and guided the colors. That process itself is healing — it stimulates memory, sparks conversation, brings joy, keeps the brain active, and fights isolation. Art becomes medicine for the mind.

What moved me most was watching our elders stand in front of the finished wall and see themselves — not as forgotten, but as celebrated. I came to help them express themselves, but in truth, they helped me express myself too.

This is why I paint.

Thank you @okerecity for trusting me with Ot Atat. Thank you @memorymosaicsinitiative for making this intergenerational healing possible.
And to my team while executing this beauty I appreciate a lot. @rawdneyk @kibirango_gabriel_ogal @ellydebuni @annie_sharmila_pink @destinytga etc.
