It’s time to start getting ready for the next book club meeting! We’re skipping October and will meet in November to discuss Secure Relating (which was suggested by one of the last book club meeting attendees!). Link is in my bio to sign up, and just like last time, please feel free to share with any therapists who may be interested. Last month was a great discussion and I’m looking forward to another one. Hope to see you there! by @raychelyearsleylpc

Let’s read together!
I toyed with the idea of doing a therapist book club in the past, now I’m finally making it happen! It’ll be virtual so therapists from all over can join. We’ll read On Being a Therapist by Jeffrey A. Kottler and then come together to discuss it on zoom. Registration is required, link in my bio! by @raychelyearsleylpc

It’s back to school season which means back to therapy season as well! I have a few openings currently for adults. Whether it’s working on your relationship with food, supporting yourself through your child’s ED recovery, moving through your trauma, or unpacking your religious baggage, therapy can help. Using talk therapy, EMDR, yoga philosophy, and polyvagal theory, we can work together to help you get where you want to be. Reach out via the link in my bio or DM to schedule a free consultation call. taken in AP and Co Collective by @raychelyearsleylpc

A little professional update for everyone. I decided this year to relinquish my NCC (National Certified Counselor) certification. What does this mean for you? Essentially nothing! The NCC certification is basically used to show that I went to an approved graduate program, passed the National Counselor Exam, and am state licensed. The NCC would be amazing if everyone had it and if each state used it to let licenses transfer across state lines. But alas, we do not live in a perfect world of parity (yet). I have taken NCC off of all of my credentials anywhere I’ve been able to so if you see it next to my name somewhere, please let me know so I can take it off :) This doesn’t affect any services I provide but I want to put it out there so everyone knows why there is a change if they notice it. If you do see it attached to my name anywhere, please know it is a relic from the past and not me intentionally using it! by @raychelyearsleylpc

Self-disclosure is a big topic in the professional world of therapy. What is appropriate to share with a client and what is not? Some therapists are more open with their clients while others are more boundaried. There is not a right or wrong, but the client’s needs should be the main consideration.

I have chosen to be open with my clients with my personal experience of chronic pain/illness. This has been for a few reasons:
1. Many of my clients also experience chronic pain or illness and by self-disclosing I hope they are able to feel that I truly understand what it’s like.
2. I sometimes need to ask clients to accommodate my needs to tend to myself- I have asked clients to push an appointment back by an hour so that I could take a nap, I’ve asked clients to move their appointment to a telehealth appointment because I did not have the energy to do everything needed to make it into the office, I’ve asked clients to move their appointment to a different day completely so I could take a sick day/a few sick hours. I typically am very honest about these things with my clients and will tell them why I’m asking for a change. The explanation is not necessary but my hope in sharing it is that it encourages my clients who have similar needs to ask for what they need from their own friends, family, and work.
3. Much of my experience with chronic pain is not too dissimilar from my client’s experiences of their mental health, especially eating disorders. Needing higher levels of care, having multiple appointments a week, feeling frustrated with your body, and knowing what you need to do but struggling to actually follow through with those things are just a few ways they can be similar. I am able to share things that have worked well for me in managing pain and apply them to my clients and help them make action plans for how to manage it all.

Clients have their own opinions and feelings on self-disclosure, but in my experience appropriate self-disclosure has been very beneficial to the therapeutic relationship. taken in AP and Co Collective by @raychelyearsleylpc

The light stream is a technique from EMDR that can be used to help regulate at the end of a session. I sometimes use it as a meditation at the end of yoga classes as well. It’s a simple guided imagery technique that anyone can do! Therapists and other clinicians can use it with clients to help regulate, and non-clinicians can use it as a resource for calming and easing uncomfortable sensations. Let me know if you try it! taken in AP and Co Collective by @raychelyearsleylpc

One of my favorite things about being a therapist in DFW is our community of mental health professionals. I have made so many wonderful friends through this field, as well as even more colleagues that I can consult with, do trainings with, and generally be inspired by. I was so thrilled and surprised when @amandastretcher from @crescentcounselingdallas reached out to me offering me a discount for Safe and Sound Protocol training, a therapeutic modality she uses and kindly chatted with me about when I expressed interest in getting trained in it. Not only was it a discount, it was for an entirely FREE training! I am so excited to do the training and be able to offer this service to my clients a little later this year! Thank you again, Amanda! If you are interested in doing SSP as a client, reach out to me and I will be sure to let you know when I’m providing it as a service! taken in AP and Co Collective by @raychelyearsleylpc

I started a substack/newsletter to share some reflections on poems! I love poetry so much and I find it to be therapeutic for myself and for clients. I hope these reflections get people thinking and applying some beautiful words to their lives. Link to subscribe is in my stories/highlights! taken in Dallas, Texas by @raychelyearsleylpc

I shared my tappers/buzzers last time and this time I’m showing off another EMDR tool. Some clients prefer the traditional eye movements that EMDR was originally based on and when I’m working virtually, I usually use this web version. It’s fully customizable (size of the ball, speed, sound or no sound, how many passes the ball makes) so I can adjust it for my client’s preferences and comfort! I personally get headaches when I do eye movements for EMDR as a client, but tons of people love the eye movements. I’ll share next about some eye movement and tapper/buzzer alternatives for those who get headaches as well or those who don’t have tappers! It should go without saying but please don’t try this at home! EMDR is always safest with a trained professional that you have a good relationship with, this is just for educational purposes :) I offer EMDR therapy in person and virtually through @apcounselingandyoga and @flourishcounselingcenter. I also love to consult with my fellow therapists regarding if EMDR therapy is right for their clients, so if you’ve got anyone you think would be helped by it and you aren’t trained, let’s connect! by @raychelyearsleylpc

What is this contraption?! These are my EMDR tappers (or buzzers). These little tappers are held in your hands (or can be sat on or placed on the chest if laying down) and feel similar to a phone vibrating. They are fully adjustable to make sure clients are comfortable. EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It is a therapy technique known for accelerating the processing of traumatic and other painful thoughts. It works by stimulating both sides of the brain (bilateral stimulation, or BLS) with eye movements, tactile sensations such as my handheld tappers/buzzers, tapping on the chest or legs, listening to binaural sounds, or even throwing a ball back and forth between your hands. EMDR is widely known for its use in treating PTSD but the possibilities are nearly limitless. I like to compare trauma/upsetting memories to a messy office- you walk in and feel out of sorts, perhaps forgetting why you came in in the first place, and maybe just close the door and pretend like the office isn’t a mess. EMDR does for the brain what a good deep clean and organization session does in the office. It makes everything easier to access with less upsetting feelings and helps you to be productive. EMDR can also be used to elicit a calm state, which clients absolutely love! There is a joke that EMDR therapists can’t make it through a session without bringing it up, but it’s true because it can be so helpful! I offer EMDR both in person @apcounselingandyoga and @flourishcounselingcenter and virtually and am always happy to talk to clients more about it to see if it would be an appropriate part of their therapy process. by @raychelyearsleylpc
