According to the latest reports, Wilber tried to pull over. He was shot anyway. He is currently sitting in ICE detention with a bullet still lodged near his spine, without the medical care he needs.

Wilber Rafael Garces Perez came to this country from Venezuela through the CBP One process in 2024. His attorneys say he applied for asylum and received authorization to work. He missed an immigration court hearing after the notice was sent to the wrong address.

On Sunday, Wilber says federal immigration agents pursued him in unmarked vehicles while he was working as a DoorDash driver. He says he asked to pull over somewhere safer than underneath a freeway. Then he was shot.

His account deserves a full, independent investigation. So does the conduct of the federal agents involved.

And Congress has questions to answer about the enormous immigration enforcement operation it has funded and the safeguards, oversight and accountability governing that power.

Thank you to the Austin community for standing up and denouncing this abhorrent behavior. We stand with Wilber, his family and every community demanding answers, due process and accountability.

This midterm election - Pay attention. Know who represents you. Examine their record. Ask what they have done with the power entrusted to them. And if you are eligible, register and vote.

Accountability requires participation. by @raycollazo_speaks

I had the honor of hosting the @unidosusaf Latino Leadership Celebration in Austin, Texas last week as part of the annual @weareunidosus Conference. It was a historic gathering of leaders from advocacy, service, politics, business, labor and content spaces with one common message: Latinos are here to stay and will thrive despite the serious challenges we face. There are too many people to thank but want to give special shoutout to our fearless leader @jmurguia_unidos and just some of my amazing colleagues #AndreaSabillon @soniavdiaz @saldanapr_ @23soyfernando @mommmaliz @enriquedavism @ericholguintx @victor_vj_martinez @m1acesar who made the event possible. Also partners @juanproano @kpichardony @hectorsanchezbarba @mifamiliavota @latinovictoryus @lulac @carlos_eduardo_espina who are helping us mobilize our community for a historic Latino voter turnout in November. As I say in the video, it’s pretty wild that a kid from 5th Street in North Philly gets to do this for a living, but God has plans for all of us, we just have to listen to our heart. More shoutouts to familia like @locoleokc #RaulSanchez @lucasrivera247 @ruizsingh @amyme25 @cidwilson @carlos_valentin_jr @ucberkeleylatino @yamelisaj @renatasototn @andresramirezlv and so many others for supporting event and their friendship. Thank you Texas y Pa’lante! taken in Austin, Texas by @raycollazo_speaks

🔥 The American Dream shouldn’t be a fairy tale.
For generations, the promise was simple: if you work hard, get an education, and play by the rules, you can build a stable life. You can buy a home, raise your kids, and retire with dignity. But right now in Texas, that dream is on life support. Texans deserve strong neighborhood public schools, fair wages, real labor protections, and a government that actually answers to everyday people. @ginafortexas taken in Austin, Texas by @raycollazo_speaks

They are betting on fear to silence us. This November, our voices need to be louder than ever to say ¡basta ya!

During the UnidosUS Austin convening for annual conference, community advocate @carlos_eduardo_espina broke down the importance of being informed and electing leaders who will drive real change. by @raycollazo_speaks

I was proud to stand with the family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston this past Friday. House Democrats held a field hearing to listen to testimony from the Salgado family and community leaders on their call for an independent and transparent investigation of this senseless murder. We are being hunted down by our own government for being Latino. Ignoring the problem will only make it worse. We either have the courage to stand with the Salgado family now or just wait our turn to be the next victims. Prayers and action for the families impacted by this rogue agency. Thx to colleagues that supported hearing and our continued support for these families. @ericholguintx @lulac @latinovictoryus @mifamiliavota @weareunidosus @unidosusaf @juanproano @kpichardony @hectorsanchezbarba @hispanic_federation @susiefeliz @shelleyq21 by @raycollazo_speaks

Delighted to join our c4 partners at the Funders’ Committee for Civic Participation (FCCP) conference in Philadelphia, in a call to action about the critical importance of organizing and investing in Latino communities, expanding voter participation, and building long-term political power through year-round engagement.
