Climate anxiety is real and for me, it’s often quiet, not dramatic. Spoke to the Independent this week about how extreme weather events are impacting my mental health.

It’s noticing brown grass in the park. It’s wondering what summers will feel like in 20 years. It’s thinking about the future I always imagined and questioning what it might look like. I realised last week that women’s bodies are literally a degree hotter than men’s and I can’t stop thinking about it and what it willl be like to go through menopause when it’s close to 40 degrees in London…

Working in climate communications means I’m immersed in this every day. I care deeply about the work, but I’ve learned I also have to protect my mental health so I can continue to do this. Here are some of things I do:
- I check the news in the morning (not all day and especially stay away from 10pm news).
- Always have a lunch break and usually a walk with no phone.
- Surround myself with good pals who work in this space who I know I can message and try and use humour as much as I can to laugh about this absolutely insane situation that we’re in shout out my sexy gals @isseymg and @littlemisswilde !!

One line from the article I keep coming back to:

“If the people who care most about the future decide not to have children because they’re afraid, we risk losing a generation of people who are deeply invested in creating a better world.” Check out for more thoughts on this from @tolmeia, she mentioned in a video that she had never questions the children in her life’s existence as that’s really stayed with me.

Grateful to have shared this conversation and to help make space for talking about the mental health side of the climate crisis. Always here to chat to anyone else feeling the same.

“We can’t just talk about extreme heat in the media while we’re in the middle of a heatwave. This isn’t a trend story about garden furniture or what skirt to wear.
It’s Climate Week, and this is the reality: trains struggling to run, children being sent home from school, hospital appointments cancelled. Our infrastructure isn’t coping.

Think about what this is doing to older and vulnerable people, and the growing inequality in the UK between those who can and can’t afford air conditioning.
This is not a one-off. It’s the beginning of what will become the new normal unless action is taken.

Write to your MP, call it out where you can, protest, and use your voice in whatever way you’re able to. We need to confront the power of the fossil fuel lobby and push for real change.

I challenge you to talk about it year-round. Not just when it’s so hot you want to stick your head in a freezer

Because this isn’t just “a bit of nice weather”, “bit of a scorcher, innit.” Let’s use the right words. It’s the climate crisis, and it’s already here.” @rayhopkinson
