I'm honored to be among the recipients of the 2021 Individual Artist Fellowship Awards from New Jersey State Council on the Arts in the category of Interdisciplinary Art. With thanks, appreciation, and congratulations to the other artists.

The Individual Artist Fellowships are competitive awards to New Jersey artists in 12 rotating disciplines granted solely on independent peer panel assessment of work samples. The anonymous process is focused on artistic quality, and awards may be used to help artists produce new work and advance their careers. New Jersey artists applied for awards this year in the categories of crafts, interdisciplinary performance and interdisciplinary visual art, photography, and playwriting and screenwriting. This program is carried out in partnership with the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. #newjerseycouncilonthethearts #midatlanticartsfoundation #interdisciplinaryart #thedepartmentofreparativehistory taken in Jersey City, New Jersey by @raymondemingst

You all know perfectly well how susceptible I am to your charming turns of phrase. The birthday wishes you’ve sent have captivated, delighted, elevated me. But all the attention has made me realize I must step away from the spotlight. My close personal friend Ariana Grande has suggested we both be without communiqué for perhaps another year. Xoxo, yours always, Raymondo (Thank you all sincerely) by @raymondemingst

Our latest reflection is a personal one.
Three years ago we shared news that was unlike anything we’d written before. Looking back, we found ourselves thinking less about illness than about what those years have revealed.

On the occasion of our shared birthday month, we’ve written Marking August 2026: A Personal Reflection.

If you’ve wondered how Arthur is doing, or if you’ve been part of the support that has carried us through these past years, we’d be grateful if you took a few moments to read it.

Thank you, as always, for being part of Curious Matter. R+A

As we began developing Erasure Gallery 2026—in the context of our year-long inquiry, On Books: The form, flow, and force of books—we turned to our own library. Again and again, works by and about David Wojnarowicz surfaced, ultimately shaping this year’s exhibition.

What happens when political language becomes cultural reality?

In our latest essay, we consider how repeated phrases can redirect public conversation about art and culture, and narrow civic imagination.

We explore how language can reveal—and conceal—the values that shape a city’s cultural future.

Erasure Gallery returns.

Born in 2025 as a temporary act of remembrance, reflection, and resistance, Erasure Gallery continues in 2026 through the lens of our year-long inquiry, On Books: The form, flow, and force of books.

This year’s exhibition turns toward the life and work of David Wojnarowicz—artist, writer, and activist. Rather than revisiting familiar narratives of censorship and controversy, we begin with the work itself and the enduring place it has occupied in our own library and lives.

There’s a terrific exhibition at the The Morgan Library, Hujar: Contact—just what the title suggests: marked-up contact sheets and prints by Peter Hujar. This exuberant image is blown up large on one of the gallery walls.

I’m sharing it as we enter what is now called NYC Pride Weekend. I still know it as GAY Pride, a name less easily absorbed into corporate branding.

I also understand and use the initials when they are useful. But I still prefer saying the words themselves: GAY. LESBIAN. BISEXUAL. TRANS. QUEER.

Whatever language you choose, MARCH boldly and have a ball. taken in The Morgan Library & Museum by @raymondemingst

As we began to shape an exhibition for Erasure Gallery 2026, we found ourselves considering gay and queer visibility through the lens of our current year-long inquiry, On Books: The form, flow, and force of books.

One of the central questions animating On Books is how ideas circulate. Revisiting Erasure Gallery, we ask: What happens when that flow is interrupted? How are ideas restricted, suppressed, or removed from circulation? What happens when entire communities are omitted from the historical record?

Read more about our process in the latest Curator’s Notebook (link below or in bio)
